You should set the HDD to Primary Master and the CD to either Primary Slave or Secondary Master. Then set the Boot order in BIOS to CD then HDD.

Primary is IDE0 or 1 (lowest number)

and Secondary is IDE 1(if Primary is 0) or 2(if Primary is 1)

Ok if you plug the optical in the top of the IDE cable thats the MASTER you need to set whatever device is going on that to MASTER also.

does that make sense?

Hi everyone and pardon me for jumping in.

Gav I see you have just built a new PC. I don't know your hardware or settings. I'll let Dalo deal with that. He is better then me.

My concern is your XP disks. Are your disks a full retail version of XP that can be used on any computer? Or are they a version of XP that was meant for the computer that you pulled the hard drive out of?

If your XP disks are not the full retail version (that is OEM or Recovery disks) they will likely not install and or validate. Many of those type of disks have to match all the hardware on your computer. Either way it will have to be installed on the new computer.

Also since this is a new computer you really should buy a version of Windows that will be supported for longer such as Vista. XP is old and is nearing the end of life cycle support from Microsoft.

All hardware issues aside you need to have a legit copy of Windows installed on the new computer not just the drive and it really should be Vista at this point.

Hi

Good to hear your up and running again ;)

How are you connecting to the internet. Do you have a router or just a modem?

  • Go to Start then Run and type cmd and press enter
  • A DOS-like window will open
  • Now type ipconfig /all (Note: the space between g and /)
  • Include these results in your next reply

Hi again, its via a cable which we have tried in another PC which hooked up to the internet ok, a reset....that didn´t cross my mind... I will do a press the reset buttern on the router and see what happens and will check again that obtain IP address is set to automatically, bit tricky to find as his PC is running on Danish language...HI from Denmark ;-) but there is no green or orange lamp showing at the ethernet conection in the back of the PC.... should it be lit up ???

The green and orange light on the back of the Ethernet port should light up yes.

Try the reset on the router and leave the unplug the internet for 30 seconds and see if they come on, do you have the latest firmware for the linksys router?

Have you installed the Ethernet drives from the MOBO disk?

If the lights on the router are not coming on then that would signify that that the router is not getting a signal from the ISP - they should come on whether you have it plugged in a pc or not.

Gav,

Have you tried without the router in the setup - just straight from the ISP and see if that works - if that doesnt work then its the settings on the pc - if it does work then its the settings on the router.

Hi once more... the lights on the router are on and there is one more PC connected to the router which works.... we have tried to swap the cable from the PC that doesn´t connect to the internet to all of the 4 ports on the router to see if that made any diff.. and swap the cables over to check for duff cable possiblities.. no luck there, but we have not installed the Ethernet drives from the MOBO disk...and will check if there is a red X or a yellow ! and get back..... thanks

Do you have a separate router and modem or is it combined?

Posted

If there are no drivers for Ethernet installed then there will be a yellow exclamation next to the network adapter.

somtimes windows update will get one for you, but I still recommend installing the one from the MOBO disk and it should then work.
