Guest it-support Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 When I installed one of our new servers it wass still unclear what it was supposed to do and when it came to naming it I just gave it a temporary boogus name thinking it was easy enough to change later. But now when I have changed that name to the real computer name I have discovered that the old name is still used everything from dns zone to exchange profiles and exchange accounts. Why hasnt all that changed when I change the computers name? How do I make sure ALL instances of the old name are updated with the new name? Thanks for any replies!
Guest Mathieu CHATEAU Posted August 23, 2007 Posted August 23, 2007 Re: A problem when changing server name. Hello, so this server hosts exchange 2003 ? Is it also a DC ? You should never do that stuff on production without testing... -- Cordialement, Mathieu CHATEAU http://lordoftheping.blogspot.com "it-support" <itsupport@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C725113C-A8CA-4484-B851-61B5ED743BA0@microsoft.com... > When I installed one of our new servers it wass still unclear what it was > supposed to do and when it came to naming it I just gave it a temporary > boogus name thinking it was easy enough to change later. > > But now when I have changed that name to the real computer name I have > discovered that the old name is still used everything from dns zone to > exchange profiles and exchange accounts. What did/does this server do? Is it a member server or a DC? Did it run Exchange? If it's an Exchange server, you can't just rename it like that or you'll break Exchange. And although you can rename a native W2003 domain, and you can rename a server, you can't rename a server running Exchange. Please provide more detail.
Guest it-support Posted August 24, 2007 Posted August 24, 2007 Re: A problem when changing server name. Thanks for the replies. Its just a small SBS with a few users and an exchange server. So, the only alternative is to reinstall the server... a classic windows solution :) Great... argh. Well...to be honest, a few seconds of Googling would have told you this. You cannot rename an SBS server or an SBS domain at all. Reinstalling from scratch is your only option. Many people choose generic server & AD domain names during setup (e.g.,SERVER01.internal.local) so this isn't an issue. Post future SBS questions in microsoft.public.windows.server.sbs and you'll get a lot of help. SBS does many things its own way, and you must be very careful even if you have experience with the base products included in that suite. > > "Lanwench [MVP - Exchange]" wrote: > >> it-support <itsupport@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote: >>> When I installed one of our new servers it wass still unclear what >>> it was supposed to do and when it came to naming it I just gave it a >>> temporary boogus name thinking it was easy enough to change later. >>> >>> But now when I have changed that name to the real computer name I >>> have discovered that the old name is still used everything from dns >>> zone to exchange profiles and exchange accounts. Guest Job Andersson Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Re: A problem when changing server name. Oki, thanks everyone. It seems a reinstall was the only valid option, I also noticed SBS is a bit different. I will check that url out.
