Why does Windows File Explorer struggle so much with missing/null metadata?

A problem I encounter frequently with Windows File Explorer is it freezing for ~10-30 seconds upon opening a directory with lots of media (e.g. ogg, mp4) files. File Explorer will automatically load in columns for videos or music where appropriate, but if the media files themselves don't contain any of the metadata that it's looking for, File Explorer will freeze for up to half a minute. This typically happens when exploring the files of games and programs, which tend to contain lots of audio and video files sans metadata.This freezing issue, while bothersome, does have its workarounds.
