stylishjm Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 :mad:Hi again, ive had a previous thread before about my slow system which worked temporarily but then things went bad again. Now ive reformatted and have nothing at all installed just, windows vista business and a few minor programs (dell media direct, microsoft expression, AVG 8 - all legit). Anyway ive given up on searching for the problem as it probably is the fact that my laptop is nearly 2 years old. Ive noticed that it works perfectly on safe mode and would like to know if you could inform me of all the services I can safely disable. Heres some basic info which might help to choose which services to disable: *Dell Inspiron 6400, Bluetooth, 2GB Ram, ATI Radeon x1400, 120GB HDD, 500GB Maxtor External USB HDD, USB WiFi (built in one is damaged), Vista Business 32 bit. *I use the internet only to chat on MSN, search for information and to download/upload files (p2p, torrents, ftp). *I dont use the Aero theme, just the basic theme. *Listen to and produce music. *The laptops only used by me. *I dont share anything on my network or stream anything. *I dont use remote desktop or anything remote like that. *I dont use any sort of backup (apart from system restore) One last thing, can you recommend a good driver update program as I have a feeling the slowness may have something to do with the fact that I cant find driver updates for all my hardware. Thank you:D
Seth Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Hi Stylish. I don't recall if I've requested the following from you, but if not, go into Task Manager and click on the processes tab. Are there any processes which take up more than 10% of the cpu, or any processes which take up more than 150,000K of memory? Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. stylishjm Posted August 20, 2008 Author Posted August 20, 2008 Hi, well im at safe mode at the moment and cpu usage total is 1% and physical memory is 36%, processes: 24.. Im going to restart the laptop now and ill get back to you with the details Thanks
stylishjm Posted August 20, 2008 Author Posted August 20, 2008 Ok im on normal mode now and for the first 10 - 15 mins things are fine then it starts slowing down when i start running programs and stays that way after I exit them, it also happens if i leave it idle. At the moment cpu usage is 5 %, memory used 51&, 50 processes. OK Now ive opened My computer and FL studio (and then closed fl studo) and now it takes 10 - 15 seconds to switch between windows and theres a 4 second delay when typing. Processes are 47, CPU is 4% and now memory used is going up and down between 30% and 99% and continues to do so even when left alone. Firefox is also freezing now and again. This happens not only with fl studio but with every other application. Is it a case of adjusting the physical memory because at the moment the system is managing it. Thanks
Seth Posted August 20, 2008 Posted August 20, 2008 Ok, so it seems to be a problem with a process taking up memory as opposed to taking up cpu cycles. When the problem is occurring, what process or processes are taking up more than 30% of the memory? BTW-System managed is fine. Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. stylishjm Posted August 20, 2008 Author Posted August 20, 2008 Ok ive restarted the pc again and opened notepad and left it for 10 mins and now physical memory usage is between 73% - 99%, and the top 3 services that use the most memory are searchprotocol @ 30mb, svchost @ 25mb and firefox @ 5mb and searchindexer keeps going up and down between 2 mb - 35 mb. Thanks
Dalo Harkin Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Have you checked with Dell for the updates - they should all be on their site? If you have 2GB RAM then there are not many programs that would touch that amount. Have you looked in MSCONFIG as there may be many things running that do not need to be. RandyL Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Jim I'm confused about your post. You said you only installed a few basic programs such as the ones you listed. But then you asked about what services to disable and listed P2P. As you well know from one of your previous threads we will not help you with this problem as long as you continue to install these programs. There is a high probability that this is once again the cause and why you once again needed to reinstall. If you need assistance on removing these programs we would be glad to help. I suggest you backup regularly and keep your Vista disk handy. Your AV is not a good one and your habits continue to be poor. We are all members helping other members. stylishjm Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 (edited) At the moment i dont have any p2p programs installed at the moment as the system is too slow and installing them would be pointless. I only have Dell media express (As it is the only way to listen to music using it), Microsoft Expression, FL Studio and a few minor programs such as Winrar and so on. I mentioned p2p etc as I would most probably use them in the future, so just incase you tell me to disable certain services which are beneficial for them to run. Edited August 21, 2008 by stylishjm
stylishjm Posted August 21, 2008 Author Posted August 21, 2008 Ive already been through MSconfig and ive only allowed AVG and Java to run and in the services there are only a few non-microsoft programs that are running... but what I need help with is knowing which microsoft services I can disable so that things will be running smoothly for me thank you :)
Seth Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 Try disabling Vista's Indexing Service, restart, and see what happens: 1. Click on Start button, then select Control Panel> System and Maintenance -> Administrative Tools, and double click on Services applet. Alternatively, simply type “Services” (without quotes) in Start Search box. 2. If User Account Control asks for permission, click Continue. 3. Locate an service named Windows Search. Right click on Windows Search, and then select Properties on contextual menu. 4. Click on Stop button to stop the indexing service immediately. 5. On the Startup Type dropdown box, select Disabled. 6. Click on OK button. 7. Restart the computer. Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Guest Wolfeymole Posted August 21, 2008 Posted August 21, 2008 You have stated that you use P2P, then you state that there is no P2P software on your machine at present but you'll use it in the future. We do not offer advice or help on any issue that involves P2P unless the person wishes to remove said software. This thread is now closed.
