Hi,

I've bought a new PC about a month ago and everything was working fine. I used to put it on standby a few times. It used to work fine until about last week when i put it on standby. The PC switched off as normal but when i pressed the on button the PC switched on but shows the "windows is starting" screen and gets stuck on that and sometimes it just shows a black screen with the mouse cursor in the middle.

How can i fix this so that i can use standby again?

Hi zkm.

When recovering from Standby, the screen will not show "Windows is starting..." That only occurs using hibernation.

Do you mean Standby or Hibernation?

sorry i'm not sure what it says but most of the time it either shows a black screen with the mouse cursor in the middle or my desktop wallpaper(no icons or anything else) with the mouse cursor in the middle.

It is defiantly standby not hibernate. i press start>turn off computer>standby

Run hard drive error checking by going to Start>Run, type in chkdsk /f (space between the K and the /) and press ok. Press Y at the black screen that appears and restart the computer. The hard drive error checking will initiate.

Watch the screen as the computer starts for a message that says "Press xx for setup (bios)". Go into the bios and then to Power Management.

What are the settings in Power Management?

I'm not sure what your expecting but i went into the BIOS and went onto the power section. The settings were as follows:

Suspend mode - Auto

Repost Video on S3 resume - Disabled

ACPI 2.0 Support - Disabled

ACPI APIC support - Enabled

Enable the following, save the changes, and hopefully that will do it:

Enable ACPI 2 support.

If that doesn't do it, we can probably rule out a hardware problem.

i have enabled it but the same thing still happens. the monitor's lights goes from blue to orange and does display anything on the screen.

Should i put the setting back to how they were?

There will be an option in the bios to "Restore Defaults". Go ahead and do that, then try Standby. As a test, please see if the same thing occurs using Hibernation.

What is the make and model of the PC?

Did you install and drivers or updates just prior do this occurring?

Danzil,

The Hibernation suggestion was for testing purposes only.

i've restored the BIOS setting to default and tried standby but the same thing happens. i have also tried hibernate, that works fine.

however when i restored the BIOS setting to default, just before the windows splash screen, for about 2-3 seconds a black screen appears with a flashing cursor in the left hand corner(didn't used to happen before i restored the BIOS settings to default). Is that a problem or is it normal?

Also danzil i can get into windows so i'm not sure why i should go into safe mode?

I haven't installed any new drivers and i bought all my PC components and got someone to fix them together so it hasn't really got a make and model, however most of the boards are ASUS i.e the motherboard, graphics card etc.
