I use it, and my friends,also,and we find it excellent.

SIW (System Information for Windows) is a handy small program to have at ones disposal.All system information at your fingertips.

For those members who have limited Computer knowledge,when a Techie asks for information,the member doesnt have to go hunting,and in a lot of cases,wouldnt know where to look.1 or 2 clicks and they have the info.:)

Wouldnt that be better suited in Tips and Tricks?as it's not software.

I tried the Command, Dalo,and its too much navigating for a Novice.IMO.

With SIW,one click on the index tree and its all there, to C/P. What could be simpler?:)

dxdiag is the best for 'diagnostic' purposes for most common hardware issues - sound/and graphics but also gives the 'helper' alot more insight into the drivers used and some 'advanced' info.

 

As you say in terms of software SIW just seems likea watered down version of Everest.

And Tinypic is a watered down version of Photobucket.

One is easier and quicker to use than the other,in both cases.

One has more bells and whistles.

 

EDIT. Everest is a great Program.Why not add that to the Library also,so Members have a choice.

Having read through all the postings, I think I can add quite a few more, first, there is not many on the list of free programs for photograph handling yet, so here goes-

The one that nearly everyone into photo manipulation recommends is Irfanview from here-

Next in line is PhotoFiltre this is of French origins but the English version is superb, easy to use and as good as some that can cost the old arm and leg, from here-

There are others, and most will know of the Adobe and Google basic editing suites to name a few, but they are just basic stuff not much better than windows own.

 

Next comes a long list of Music handling and writing programs, well me being a musician what do you expect?

First is a simple recording program that can convert any sound file that you can play on your computer, such as midi or video related sound tracks, and convert them to either WAV or MP3 and is called MP3 My MP3. available from here-

Have you got a noisy recording? would you like to clean it up? try Audacity, this is from the sourceforge site mentioned earlier and will also convert audio files to MP3 or WAV as well as one or two other useful tricks in its repertoir-

Next we go straight into the complex world of music sequencers and music notation witing programs, the first in my list being the Frieve Music Studio Producer, this is the free one, they also do Music Studio Independance, which is shareware and costs $39 to buy the full licence, however both are available to download from here-

To use this software you do need to know a lot about handling sequencers but is a very good program considering it is free, and it will also show the music from a midi file in notational form, but you cannot print it out in this the free version.

 

Next one is a true notation program which you can use to write those silly tadpoles on their lines, then play it back to hear your creation, it is full of its own manual which tells you everything you need to use it and is called Anvil Studio, available from here-

Unfortunately you cannot print off your music without buying the plugin, however you can create a midi file, store it somewhere you know where it is, then get this useful little program to print it for you. It is called "Notation Player" although only meant to be a player of midi files you can print the notation off from the display and can be found here-

You may have to search the site fully for "Notation Player" as they don't seem that keen on giving this one away, they would much rather you try their shareware and buy it.

 

Next is from the stable of Finale the American company whose main product is used by musicians worldwide and rather expensive, however they do a free program called "Finale Notepad" which is meant to get you wanting all the goodies that the paid for version gives, so hence rather a basic notation writing piece of software, but still useful for those who want to learn more about music.

both work great...though audacity requires the additional download of the lame encoder to export mp3's, or atleast it used to...that latest version may not. (lame - http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=290&package_id=309&release_id=628063) and debut requires the download of additional codecs to record in those codecs...if u use a codec it doesn't have it will ask if u want to download that codec and then it will automatically download and add.

 

 

the add-ons for audacity and debut are also free :p

It must be me getting old, but I fail to understand the point of programs like these.

 

I understand wanting to customize a desktop and do it myself. But a log in page?

 

Why install an entire program in order to change the appearance of something that you see for a few seconds. This one may be safe, I don't know, but are you aware of the many screensaver downloads that come packed with malware?

Although I don't know this program loading superfluous things with no benifit should be thoroughly researched and tested first.

your worries are all valid. all i can say is, i've been running the program for about 2 weeks with no issues, but there's still no garantees with these kind of programs. :p

I have known about stardocks programs for a long time, but I have also seen many problems caused by their programs, I once, used to want all these programs to customised every inch of my windows but after a few of their problems, I've learned the hard way :P

 

Cost me a brand new copy of windows to get rid of the problems.

 

But as well, on the other hand there are people who have had no problems at all.

The issue King is not whether this particular piece of software is safe or not. You are a good member, post all the time and I am sure would never consider steering any other members wrong.

 

My concern, actually, is for you. I would hate to see a post from you warning members against a bit of software and relating a horror story.

 

The web is filled with this kind of software, it looks harmless and kind of cool. Screensavers, desktops etc. are known to be trouble.

Thanks For The heads up. I have used one of their more complex programs but i didn't like it. I only use logon Studio because it's simple enough that i'm not too worrried about it screwing things up. Their more complex programs are all pretty much doing the same thing and seem dangerous since you actually start modifying buttons and layouts (delete the wrong one and ur screwed). I am aware of all the risks and appreciate your forewarning. :p
