Does anyone know if it is a good idea to install the Windows Genuine

Advantage Tool? What purpose does it serve? Is it better NOT to install?

Does it take up much space on the computer?

Re: WGA

Hello,

normally, it's not a bad idea to install it. It doesn't take up much space.

Here's information on the Genuine Advantage:

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/

Hope this helps.

Greetings,

I would wait till tuesday if you can.

Here is a copy of my Vista group posting.

Do not know if this will work for xp computers but it might.

WGA temporary fix

http://blogs.msdn.com/wga/archive/2006/10/05/WGA-service-outage.aspx

1) Delete the data.dat file from C:\Documents and Settings\All

Users\Application Data\Windows Genuine Advantage\data (The drive

letter will depend on where the OS was installed)

2) Revisit

http://www.microsoft.com/genuine/downloads/validate.aspx to confirm

whether the machine is genuine.

3) Run wgatray.exe /b from the command line to ensure that the

latest validation is updated for WGA Notifications. This command may

be absent from the user’s machine and should not be considered an

error. Please ensure that this is run as an Administrator. A reboot

may be required to remove all non-genuine notifications.

Are you referring to the WGA Notifications tool

The WGA is supposed to frequently verify that your software is legal.

But it was a bad idea for me. After WGA I got notices that my O/S is

not genuine. I guess WGA can not "see" my legally-purchased

holograph sticker & CD. After calling Microsoft the situation was

resolved. WGA doesn't take up much space but can act like malware or

even a faulty virus.

I have not installed it and I don't wish to install any unnecessary

patches. In any case, I have not bought a single Microsoft Product

since DOS days!! Whatever I need is copied or what Microsoft might say

pirated. Either way, I am very happy indeed that my computer works fine

without WGA or activation. My name is Hacker! I am still working on how to crack Windows Vista!

There is no benefit to you if you download and install it and it may

create problems.

Re: WGA

You will need to have 892130 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/892130)

installed to be able to use Windows/Microsoft Update websites.

You do not need 892130 installed for Automatic Updates to work properly.
