Guest Mike X Posted August 25, 2007 Posted August 25, 2007 When double clicking on Printer Preferences or Properties, I get the following message: Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. After clearing that message I get this: Dr. Watson Postmortem Debugger has encountered a problem and needs to close. I have tried SFC/Scannow from the command line, but that didn't help. Also, when double clicking System or Power in the Control panel, I get the following message: RUNDLL An exception occurred while trying to run... Any suggestions would be appreciated.

First make sure the machine is clean then have a look in the event viewer for error message that can shed some light on the causer. To access the Event Viewer, open a run command and type in: eventvwr.msc click [OK] There you will see three Options/Folders: Application System Security By clicking on each and look in the Right Pane/Window you will see a report Log Double click on the error Message (X) to get more info and you can copy and paste in your next post. You receive an "Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by Windows" error message http://support.microsoft.com/?scid=kb;EN-US;Q314867 Can't access Windows Explorer, Control Panel et al. http://aumha.net/viewtopic.php?p=80536 = This can be caused also by BHO third-party, Video card malfunctioning, hardware driver going bad. The same thing happens in the Device Manager when I double click on Network or Internet Options. About the only options left are to do some scanning, so I'm going to try that. What do you think of uninstalling XP and then reinstalling it? Or maybe simply installing it over the XP that is already there?

How to Perform a Windows XP Repair Install: http://michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm If that doesn't cure the issue then a clean install is your next option, but backup your data from the computer first in either Repair/ install or Clean Install to be in a safe side.
