Seth Posted August 24, 2008 Posted August 24, 2008 Just did a destructive recovery from the hidden partition on a newer HP desktop. The recovery completed successfully, but the system keeps booting to the recovery partition. This was after running chkdsk on it. Even crazier? F8 brings up the boot menu then asks if I want to boot the recovery console or XP Pro (the system has XP home on it and I'm the only tech that's worked on the computer:confused:). All F8 boot options show the typical hal.dll as being corrupt, even after the destructive recovery. My guess is that the destructive recovery isn't working at all. I'm in the midst of doing a repair recovery and will see what happens. Another option is a bootcfg /rebuild. Failing that, screw the recovery. I'll just use one of my HP/XP cd's to install. Seth Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 **** it. I chose to go into the recovery console built into the hard drive to run the rebuild. Stupid thing went right back to HP's system recovery (insert smilie for madness). I'm loading the RC from a cd right now. Don't make me come over there! lol Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Register here If Free PC Help has helped you then please consider a donation. Seth Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 Hi Randy. Hal and I go way back. Been there, done that. I've even got (and used) little known fixes for that Hal bad boy. Keep in mind that I did a destructive recovery. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 Want more crazy stuff? The recovery console from an HP cd shows: 1) C:\MiniNT 2) C:\I386 3) H:\Windows What the hell is H?:confused::confused: I've been repairing computers for thirteen years, gone into the RC hundreds of times, but I've never seen H:\Windows. I've had enough. My rates are now $2000 an hour:D Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 Well the bootcfg rebuild worked to a point. Windows begins to start but then shows: "The system is not fully installed. Please run setup again" LMAO Seth rolls up his sleeves... Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth Posted August 24, 2008 Author Posted August 24, 2008 Ya, I did the recovery more than once. I'm well past that BS now, as I fully suspect that the recovery partition is corrupt. As such, I'm reinstalling XP via an HP/XP cd. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. Seth Posted August 25, 2008 Author Posted August 25, 2008 I went as far as swapping out the drive. As I was rubbing my forehead trying to figure it all out, I noticed that the F10 key was halfway down. Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help.
