Guest Handyman50 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Can some one help me? I just completed adding the windows fax componet, however every fax i generate and try to send says "No dial tone, Phone line is in use or not connected" Now I have spoke to a few people and some say its not possible for a computer to do this and I need to get a fax machine. However I have done some research and to my understanding the Fax wizard is susposed to do what a fax machine does with out buying one. I have Road runner and I use a wireless to connect to the router for Roadrunner. if you have questions please ask and I will answer back. Thank You in advance JD

Frankly, they are uninformed, and quite wrong - unless they are referrng to your cable or DSL modem, in which case they are right. But your next statement indicates that you don't quite understand the hardware requirements. > However I have done some > research and to my understanding the Fax wizard is susposed to do what a > fax > machine does with out buying one. Yes, and it requires use of a modem properly attached to an active telephone line. This is *not* a Cable or DSL modem. Neither of those will work for this purpose. > > I have Road runner and I use a wireless to connect to the router for > Roadrunner. Ah. I would understand from those two sentences that you either do not have a modem attached to your system, or it's not attached to your phone line. Faxing generally cannot be done via internet, although there are some internet fax services, which are not free. If you have subscribed to such a service, they will have given you instructions for configuring your fax program, or supplied you with one. You can *not* otherwise send or receive a standard fax via an internet connection. Cable and DSL modems won't work. Your ISP is not relevant - you don't need one. You are going to have to connect to the phone line with a wire, just an ordinary telephone cable, to your system's modem. Does your system actually have a modem, and is it properly attached to the phone line? HTH -pk > > if you have questions please ask and I will answer back. > Thank You in advance > JD
Guest Handyman50 Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Re: FAX Wizard windows xp Wow It was sure good to hear from you, I have been banging my head for awhile now. On my computer I went to the start menu clicked on start, then >on control panel> add remove programs> then> add remove components> checked Fax services and that launched FAX Wizard. acording to my computer I have a "Softv92 Data Fax Modem with smart CP attached to com 3. I have as I mentioned Time Warner Road Runner with digital phone. do you think if I connect a phone line from my tower to the cable modem it might work? Or am I going to need (A) fax Machine with a hard wire phone line (B) seperate Phone line Hard wired for the computer or © Fax connected to both my computer and cable modem. That should work fine, as long as it's connected properly with a standard phone cord to a working analog phone line that gets a dial tone. The fact that your phone service is digital may not matter, if it's converted from digital to analog at the cable modem. This is easy to test with an ordinary phone. If such a phone gets a dial tone, should be OK. > I have as I mentioned Time Warner Road Runner with digital phone. Actually I don't believe that you mentioned the digital phone service. That can be an issue, but it also may not be. If you can use any ordinary phone with the service, you should be OK. If you have to use special digital phones, there could be a problem. > do you think if I connect a phone line from my tower to the cable modem it > might work? Test this to find out. Connect a standard analog telephone, no matter how cheap, to the phone port on the cable modem. All that matters is that the phone isn't broken. If you get a dial tone, yes, it will probably work. If you don't get a dial tone with a standard analog phone, you can't fax with your PC's fax modem or a standard fax machine. Time Warner says that a fax machine will work with the digital phone service: http://www.timewarnercable.com/CustomerService/FAQ/TWCFaqs.ashx?faqMap=15794&MarketID=68 "FAQ >> Digital Phone Service >> Installation, Equipment and Service Q:Will my fax machine work with Digital Phone service? A:Yes, fax machines work with Digital Phone service. If you have any problems sending or receiveng faxes using Digital Phone, please contact your local Time Warner Cable customer service office. " > Or am I going to need (A) fax Machine with a hard wire phone > line (B) seperate Phone line Hard wired for the computer or © Fax > connected to both my computer and cable modem. The issue is the phone line with dial tone. Not all digital phone services provide this. It looks like yours does. If you can't get a dial tone with a standard phone, a fax machine will not work either. In some cases with digital PBX phone systems you'll see in offices, analog line cards have to be installed to allow standard modems, which are analog devices, to fax. If you don't get a dial tone with a standard phone, contact your telephone service provider, and ask them how to configure their service to send faxes. You may need extra hardware. > You wrote: " You are going to have to connect to the phone line >> with a wire, just an ordinary telephone cable, to your system's modem." >> so if I am correct in understanding you, your telling me I will need >> (B)seperate Phone line Hard wired for the computer . You have to get to the point where a standard analog telephone gets a dial tone. Once that's done, simply connect that cable to your PC's fax-modem, and you should be able to send and receive faxes. If the modem speaker is on, when you click Send, you should hear a click, dial tone, then dialing, then handshaking (the back and forth static sounds). Usually modems are set to shut off the speaker once the negotiation is complete and connection is made; sometimes they are set to have the speaker off entirely. It's sometimes helpful when setting up to have the speaker on. How you do this depends on your modem. Guest George Hester Posted August 26, 2007 Posted August 26, 2007 Re: FAX Wizard windows xp That is right. You need to have what is called a FAX Modem. Then you can just hook your phone line to the modem. -- George Hester ________________________________ "Handyman50" <Handyman50@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:AC1F9397-82D2-451B-A94B-7E854A2860D5@microsoft.com... > Can some one help me? Normally, you have to configure your Fax Modem to work without "wait for dial tone". Open Control Panel > "Phone and Modem Options" > "Modems" tab > Properties > "Modem" tab > untick "Wait for dial tone before dialing"
