my lap top appears to be booting up but the screen remains blank, as in no response whatsoever. Is there some sort of sleep thing going on here or is it more serious? It is only 7 months old.

Failing that have you had the monitor plugged into an external monitor recently or a TV?

Take out the battery and unplug the power cable. After an hour, try powering the laptop with just the power cable (leave the battery out).

If that doesn't work, see if you can get a display using an external monitor.

Most laptops will have a function key that disables the lcd when it's hooked up to an external monitor. That particular function key will have a monitor symbol on it.

Quite possible the cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) or the high voltage supply for it died. This is the light source and edge illuminate a thick glass plate that is the backing for the display. Try shining a high intensity light on the screen from the front, maybe at an angle, and see if you can see information on the screen. If you can then the LCD panel and the associated circuitry are OK and just the backlight died. The lamps themselves are thin, usually a couple mm diameter, and usually located along the bottom edge of the screen. They are cheap and readily available, but a dog to replace because they are usually buried pretty well. You can find a lot of information on the web and many times model specific information on the replacement procedure. .

It is very uncommmon for the CCFL to go within 7 months, but it is a possibility - Davy if the laptop is still under warranty as it should be then send it to them, and see what they say - I would say as others have suggested that the screen is broke, and as mentioned previously this only normally happens when the screen is picked up by the screen side of the laptop, the ribbon normally gets stretched or the screen cracks.

Ship it off to the menders (under warranty)

and let us know how you get on please.
