Hello

Recently my hardrive keeps making a strange buzzing noise while im using my pc then my pc will restart itself. i have to turn it off from the power button as it will keep restarting itself in a loop not going beyond the window xp loading screen.

Then i have to switch off the computer from the plug to stop the computer switching on it self.

After That i have to wait about 30 minutes before i can login to windows again without it restarting.

im not sure what to do..

your help would be appreciated

Thankyou

Hello Fiz

Welcome to FPCH

This could be one or both of two things, the hard drive is on it's way out or the cpu heatsink fan and heatsink are choked with dust and overheating.

Take the side off and remove all dust and debris with a can of compressed air.

Get back to us once you have done this.

It is more likely to be as Wolfey has said the CPU heatsink than the HDD - if the HDD was on its way out you would get increased loading times and glitches/delays when opening programs

Thanks

I think my hardrive is on its way out since sometimes when im using an application it quite slow and takes quite a while to respond but this only happens sometimes.

i did use a can of compressed air to clean both fans :) i didnt have a screw driver to hand so i cleaned it from the outside.

any idea how much a new hardrive would cost?

would pc world be a good place to purchase one?

oh and my final question. My fan is quite noisy could i purchase a less noisy one? :)

okay

Thanks

Yes - the HDD (Hard drive is dying)

PC WORLD - No they would be more expensive than someone like scan.co.uk.

Dependant on the size and whether it was IDE or SATA interface (this depends on the age of the PC) then you would be looking between £30-£40

Yes you can purchase fans that run slower or use the BIOS to slow the fan down, this will only work if the fan is ok - if the fan is broken as in the bearings gone then it will be noisy and a new one needed.

I suggest that you invest in a screwdriver and get the side off because if the CPU heatsink and fan is clogged you are going to have some serious problems in the long term if not already.
