They might both specify the same printer. The printer isn't defined in the programs. You select the printer and the printer driver decides which port to use. The programs might be sharing the same printer but they shouldn't care about what port the printer uses since that is a property of the *printer* that you configure outside those programs. I'm guessing there is something critical that you are not mentioning, like these are DOS programs that try to write directly to a port rather than send to a printer device. DOS programs that attempt direct access to hardware won't run well or at all under an NT-based version of Windows.
