Guest rodeoxp Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 Hi i am totally new to forums, but would be enormously gratefull if anyone can shed any light on this issue for me. I have windows XP home on a pentium 4 machine with adequate ram/cpu (recently overhauled) and am unable to install the art software for my daughter (kidpix) because the process is halted about halfway through by an error message stating that no shortcut could be created. I am told this is because the machine is older and that there is something in windows service pack 2 which is causing this. Many thanks simon.

Try installing the software with no antivirus software running. Turn the AV back on when you've installed. Please report back and let us know if that worked.

Unfortunately exactly the same thing occurs at the same point , i get an error message saying 'cannot create shortcut' at which point the install wizard seems to dissapear and the install process appears to crash. I've tried leaving it for sometime but the only thing that happens is the cd drive becomes reluctant to eject the disc ! cheers simon.

I very strongly doubt whether either of those has anything to do with the problem at all. You probably have something running that's interfering withthe installation. Try stopping all running running programs, including those running in the background (stop them from Task Manager if necessary) including your security software (if you have an always-on internet connection, disconnect it first) and try again. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup

It has literally just been overhauled cleaned , new fan etc and had a complete fresh install of windows XPhome, on account of the fact it was previously locked down with the 'blue screen of death' thanks to my wonderfull kids! I have done as you suggested - disconnected internet , shut down all firewall/AV and other background running things that i could find open, and still exactly the same scenario - it goes two thirds through the install , gets to the error message 'cannot create shortcut' and then cuts out. We got the same error message when we downloaded and installed microsoft messenger live however in this instance it ignored the shortcut failure and continued to install the rest of it's necessary components ! cheers simon.
