Is a file fragmentation happening on my laptop?

Seven months prior, I took the initiative to alleviate the storage strain on my device by transferring all my photos onto an external hard drive. This action successfully boosted the available free space to a commendable 20 GB (gigabytes). However, as time goes on, the current state of affairs presents a less-than-satisfactory scenario, as the available space has dwindled to a mere 12 GB.Are there any possible explanations behind this cause? And, are there any solutions?
