<newbie> DNS zone name

Recommended Posts

Hey

my home network consist of 2 computers (winXP and win2k3)

Now I'm about to configure DNS on the machine with Windows Server 2003. The

goal is to have this computer is the domain controller in my network...and

also configure Active Directory on my network

okay the problem is with deciding what zone name to use for primary zone. I

don't have any registered domains etc.. Lets say I use "microsoft.com" as

zone name, would that create trouble for my DNS server? problems like it is

confusing microsoft.com with the real microsoft.com... ???

(it may sounds like an overkill to have DNS, AD on my little network, but I

do this in the spirit of learning how to configure windows network... and

having 2 computers at home which I can play arround with are just fantastic,

although the win2k3 computer has only an Pentium 450MHz CPU....)

Best Regards!

Jeff

Hi Jeff,

Basically unless you are going to host your own websites externally and

choose to host your own DNS for it (many companies use a DNS hosting service

company for this), then you are fine. You can name your domain whatever you

wish it to be, since its just internal, the outside world doesnt know or

care what your domain name is. If you do make it a name of a website you go

to though, you would just need to create a DNS record on your server which

points http://www.microsoft.com (for example) to its correct external address

(appears to currently be 207.46.192.254).

Thats great that you are setting this stuff up to learn from! Let us know if

you have any other questions. :-)

http://www.microsoft.com is 207.46.19.190 from where I am right now.

Jumping in here I agree with a lot of what Coraleigh said, and

self-learning is a great place to start and learn all the errors and

mistakes in a safe place :) I'm sure everyone wishes they'd just tried

that tiny little configuration change out on their home test network

before it crashed at work :)

You'll never keep up with putting external DNS in place for something

like Microsoft.com, there must be hundreds of sub-domains and you'll

spend your entire life keeping up with their DNS changes so you can

access their services (updates. downloads. that kind of thing). Same for

google.com etc. Yes you can, but it'll be a pain.

Why not use something you know for certain is never going to cause a DNS

issue (unless ICANN have a brain fart) and use jeff.local or something

like that.

On the other hand, try it and figure out for yourself why it isn't a

good idea to use microsoft.com
