Why is it when i use my microphone (for recording software, voice calls, etc) my game/system audio sounds distorted and quiet?

when i use my microphone (for recording software, voice calls, etc) my game/system audio sounds distorted and quiet. Also, when im on a voice call and my microphone is being used, the other person sounds loud and distorted and i cant make out anything they are saying.Can someone please tell me why this is happening and/or how to fix it?
