Guest Jack Posted August 27, 2007 Posted August 27, 2007 I read that I could backup those files(wpa.dbl and wpa.bak) from system32 folder before I decide to reinstall windows on my reformated drive , this way I would not need to go thru the XP activation process again. However I cannot find the file "wpa.bak" , why is that ? I have XP Professional and I never did any reinstallation. Thanks. Jack

Apparently that copying trick doesn't work any more but on line activation is just a couple of clicks. -- Alias To email me, remove shoes
Guest Brian A. Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Re: Files "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" I wouldn't even worry about it especially if you have an OEM system. You shouldn't have a problem as long as you have the Product Key to install the OS, or as I've found on a few systems that it wasn't needed when restored from an image. Guest JCO Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Re: Files "wpa.dbl" and "wpa.bak" I believe the wpa.bak is a backup of wpa.dbl. Therefore, you only need the wpa.dbl file. Yes it holds your activation information. As to rather that works anymore or not... I don't know. But it is simple enough to do... so do it. There are many files on your system that you might want to do this with. Eventually over a period of time, you get a list of things that need to be done. For instance, if you use Outlook for your calendar or email, you want to save off the *.pst file. That is the entire database for outlook (just an example). There are also dictionary files that can be saved, so that your spell checker picks up where you left off, instead of starting over. That last one is not to important but it may matter so some people. That myth is widely reported, but false. Moreover, if you do reinstall Windows, reactivation should be as quick and simple as it was the first time. It's a mistaken solution to a problem that doesn't exist. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup However I cannot > find the file "wpa.bak" , why is that ? > I have XP Professional and I never did any reinstallation. > Thanks. > Jack
