Guest Bobbi Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Is there a setting to speed up transfer of files between my hard drive and my floppy drive? -Bobbi

Your hard drive can be a demon, but it cannot copy the files any faster than the floppy drive can *write* them, and that is a snail's pace by today's standards. The floppy drive has been a "generic" device (read "unchanged") since the early nineties. Guest Bobbi Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Re: Tweaking the floppy drive On my Win 3.1 machine, there was indeed a way to speed up transferring data to and from the floppy drives. I can write files faster on that machine than on my Win XP machine. A lot of attention was devoted to it. Today, it is a near-forgotten afterthought. You do not even get a floppy drive on most new computers unless you specifically request it (about $20 extra). I'm certainly not any great expert, Bobbi, and I'll be interested to see what any MVP has to say - if anything - about this, but I'm certain there is no tweak in XP to make the floppy drive *copy* files faster. Simply turn off the write verify and that will speed things up.

No. It happens at the speed of the slower device--in this case the floppy drive, and that is slow indeed. What are you transferring to floppies? Why? Floppies are very close to obsolete these days, and for many very good reasons. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup
Guest Bobbi Posted August 28, 2007 Posted August 28, 2007 Re: Tweaking the floppy drive I'm just transferring occasional files from an old computer to the new one. The old computer doesn't have USB, and it sure isn't worth installing one. On the old computer long ago, I changed some setting that sped up transfer speeds, but that was so long ago I couldn't possibly remember. In my view, if the need is occassional, don't worry about and just accept the slow speed. -- Ken Blake - Microsoft MVP Windows: Shell/User Please reply to the newsgroup > "Ken Blake" <kblake@this.is.an.invalid.domain> wrote in message > news:Oi4iZ$X6HHA.2752@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... >> "Bobbi" <bobbi@example.invalid> wrote in message >> news:uFAbJsS6HHA.2752@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... >> >>> Is there a setting to speed up transfer of files between my hard drive >>> and my floppy drive? >> >> >> No. It happens at the speed of the slower device--in this case the floppy >> drive, and that is slow indeed. >> >> What are you transferring to floppies? I remember being able to save files to floppy and it would appear to be done in a flash. But all it did was cache everything so the floppy would continue receiving the data until everything was written, but the dialog disappeared immediately. Problem was too many users ejected the disk thinking it was done without checking the light on the drive. -- Terry R. ***Reply Note*** Anti-spam measures are included in my email address.
