how to turn off numbers

hi my daughter has a toshiba laptop ,the numbers are on letters but she cant get the numbers off . i thought it was the num lock that would switch between letters and numbers but it makes no difference. its probably something very simple but we cant find out what to do ,any help is appreciated.
