jadenikole Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 hi, this is my first post , i was wondering if anyone could help me. i switched my daughters pc on this morning and it wont load, it gets to - "searching for boot record from IDE - 0 - OK " then says - " A DISK READ ERROR HAS OCCURRED " And then advises me to re boot, which just brings this error messageup again. any help with this would be really appreciated, my daughter has to go back to school tomorrow, and she has been doing loads of work over the summer, and now cant print any of it out, thanks in advance :) Quote
Guest Wolfeymole Posted September 3, 2008 Posted September 3, 2008 Hi Jade Welcome to FPCH It sounds like the hard drive is dying, can you try booting into Safe Mode by tapping F8 on boot up. If not then get back to us. Quote
jadenikole Posted September 3, 2008 Author Posted September 3, 2008 hi, it is only about 6 months old, when i tap f8 it just goes to the error message again, Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 HDD's can die at any time - if it has a warranty then return it to them as they will provide a replacement. if you cannot get to safe mode then the disk is dead. jadenikole Posted September 4, 2008 Author Posted September 4, 2008 oh no, is there any way i can get files off the drive? Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 You can do this from safe mode - or you could try slaving the drive to another pc - its a 50/50 chance as you may just not be able to load the OS - therefore slaving may work, but if the HDD is completely gone then it wont work and you cannot get the files. Slave the drive and cross everything  Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.

RandyL Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Since your computer is running Vista and is so new I assume you have a SATA hard drive not an EIDE. Can anyone provide detailed steps on this? How do you connect and slave a SATA? Quote We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. Guest Wolfeymole Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Well if slaving to a board with IDE connectors one of these would be fine. http://www.maplin.co.uk/images/Full/a11az.jpg Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 4, 2008 Posted September 4, 2008 Sorry Randy - was just a figure of speach - ALL SATA drives are masters there are no slaves - so you would just plug the drive into another computer via SATA cable and then activate the disk via admin tools/disk management.
