Jamey Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 I'll be 17 in August of this year, so I've been researching for the cheapest possible car insurance. For new drivers, it is bound to be extremely expensive. So, I'm going for a Group 1 car that will have low tax and hopefully low-ish insurance. The cheapest I could find to insure myself for my first year's driving (obviously presuming that I even pass) is... £1108. Shocking! That was with Tesco's car insurance. With the same quote system and car but using my girlfriend's details... £484! So women drivers must be safer, that's all I can conclude. That and the fact that a lot of newly-passed drivers end up "souping up" their "beasts" and drive around smashing people. Anyway, I added myself onto that deal as a secondary driver: £520. What a deal. Does anyone else have any experience or tips to save money? I really don't want to be spending a fortune (that I don't have) on a car, its insurance, MOT, tax and upkeep (not to mention petrol). Quote
Guest Josh^Clarke Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 So what car are you planning on getting? Quote
Jamey Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 (Previous post removed) Probably a Mini. I hope that doesn't cause too many shudders. But, according to my girlfriend, they suck so it'll be something else. Any suggestions? :P Quote
Josh Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 LoL back with my alter alias lol - how about a Fiat, they seem to be cheap and not too 'common' - if you get what I mean LoL Quote
Jamey Posted January 21, 2006 Author Posted January 21, 2006 Yeah good idea, maybe a Fiat Cinquecento, a Punto... or some other? They do pretty reliable small cars with low insurance. Quote
andyhargreaves Posted January 21, 2006 Posted January 21, 2006 Get the insurance policy in your own name. You'll spend more in the first instance, but you'll definately save in the long run. As for the car, there's loads to choose from. I would recommend a Seat Ibiza (like ours) - low insurance, great to drive, fantastic fuel economy, great spec for the money (single CD/radio, air-con as standard on all models; climate control and CD changer standard on most), and reasonably low depreciation. It's built by VW, so great reliability (although we had a major ECU fault, it was well within warranty period so no worries - no other problems). Also Seat were doing free insurance a few years ago on new Ibizas - well worth it if you can qualify. I've heard Citroen are good for the same deal, and younger drivers are eligible. Current Fiats are OK. Punto is fairly spacious for the price/size. Underpowered, often. I like Minis! New and 'classic'. You haven't lived until you've driven a 'classic' Mini around a track. Certainly an interesting, and very rewarding, first car. My first car (in the 1990s) was a MK1 Fiesta Ghia. It was the dog's whatsits in its day, and did 60,000 miles for me without putting a foot wrong. Doubt you'd get one now in any reasonable condition, though - mine was very well looked after. Andy PS - glad to see things up and running again! Quote
Jamey Posted January 22, 2006 Author Posted January 22, 2006 Wow, thanks for that. I'm guessing by having the policy in my own name it will allow its price to fall over time? I really the Seat Ibiza, but I doubt I'd be able to buy a model that is new or even that recent. I don't think I'll opt for a classic Mini to begin with, my girlfriend was so down that I was even considering it! For some reason, I have a prejudice against anything Ford. :P I'm glad to see you're back so soon, I really want FPH to grow again. Thanks, Jamey Quote
andyhargreaves Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 Yes, build up your No Claims Bonus, and the price will soon drop. A few years ago Admiral were doing 10 month policies, but these counted for a full years NCB. If you can find a similar deal, you'll find it much easier to build up the savings - just try putting the same details into an internet insurace quotation, change the NCB, and see the prices fall. HelzBellz Posted January 22, 2006 Posted January 22, 2006 jamey, you should get the mini if you want 2. just dont expect me to wanna share with you cus...well....just no....i HATE them!!! :-P if we got seperate insurance and seperate cars then it wud be cheaper in the long run but if we got a shared insurance and shared car then it would be cheper now, right? so we should make it cheaper for the future or else were gonna get a bit stuck! its up 2 you. xxx Helen. x Quote

andyhargreaves Posted January 23, 2006 Posted January 23, 2006 a corsa i wouldnt mind No no no no no no no no no no no, erm, no. Absolutely awful. Underpowered, crappy plastic interior, ghastly to drive, and (as Cooper said) terrible image. Applies to both old and newer models. $0.02 Andy Quote
merciarich Posted January 24, 2006 Posted January 24, 2006 OOOO, now now now, dont be nasty about the Corsa I wouldn't mind me one of the new Astra Sport 2.0, i love the look of them Jamey, try http://www.endsleigh.co.uk <---- they specialise in students and offer student discounts at 10-15%, i recommend you do PassPlus too as this gives a large discount, again Endsleigh cater for those discounts. Do a search in google for "PassPlus" for more info. My insurance was bad though, £2000 on a 1.8 turbo Nissan Quote
Cooper Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 if someone offered me a corsa for free i woulda care i would take it.. and not sell it .. my mates just past driving his 1litre peice of S*** lol corsa it hate first gear and the clutch is very light .. lol but a 1.2 i wouldnt mind it can cope.. :P Quote
Jamey Posted January 25, 2006 Author Posted January 25, 2006 I wouldn't put down any car that works; I'd drive anything that moves with an engine, as long as I could afford it. Thanks mercia for that link, I'll see if it's cheaper than the £1100-odd that Tesco, Prudential and MoreThan offer. :P Quote
merciarich Posted January 25, 2006 Posted January 25, 2006 I wouldn't put down any car that works; I'd drive anything that moves with an engine' date=' as long as I could afford it. Thanks mercia for that link, I'll see if it's cheaper than the £1100-odd that Tesco, Prudential and MoreThan offer. :P[/quote'] No probs Jamey, bear in mind that anything over a 1.5 engine has to be double the road tax! I wish I had a 1.0 or 1.2 maximum coz the petrol cost is much better and you dont have to pay as much tax and insurance. Parts and spares are also cheaper for some reason lol Quote
lodzinski Posted February 12, 2006 Posted February 12, 2006 the corsa is s***e. really it is. Fiat is where its at, if you can cope with something breaking on a weekly basis. admiral are quite friendly to youngsters, as are adrian flux. If ur parents are on Direct Line, you get a discount, and you can build up no-claims whilst on their policy, so try and persuade. anything over 1.4 is going to kill you on insurance, ans remeber anything from europe with a diesel engine will prolly be a 1.9, and that is going to fly, but again be pretty costly. BTW jim, dont go for a mini, they are bloody shocking. I had to paint one with a show spec bosy kit on it and it was a fecking nightmare, not to mention the damn things are hell to drive, and pretty uncool, considering anything fettled with by john would mean you would have to bend over and be shanked by your insurance broker to get a quote. Try the back of a modders' magazine like max power, as they have loads of insurance firms, amny who are used to dealing with younguns. Quote
