Re: Vista's ONE good feature

Hello Kelly,

"My" village seems hardly to have a week go by without two or three short

breaks in mains power, all within the space of a few seconds or couple of

minutes. I understand that it's often caused by something like a swan or

other largish bird flying into power lines, out across the moors somewhere,

and tripping out our local sub-station - which then tries to auto-reset I

think it's up to three times - and if that fails on the 3rd attempt, then

"they" have to send someone out to sort it out !

....now for the conspiracy theory ! <VBG>

.... several times during the past few months whilst talking to my brother in

Bournemouth, and a couple of other people in local towns and villages, and

during the conversation, we wandered onto the topic of Echelon and the

"black rooms" filled with high speed equipment and software listening for

keywords, ...so we shout a few words at each other for fun like "bomb" "blow

up" "explosive" etc.- speculating that perhaps a software voice recognition

little red blinky thing is blinking away and highlighting our phone call for

closer scrutiny, ...all good fun, but, then, sometimes during the 'phone

call, or very shortly afterwards, there's a power outage. ...so we

occasionally speculate that the "closer scrutiny" is someone prodding a

button somewhere to "get their own back," and give us a short power cut !!

....of course it seems ridiculous to suggest that the "powers that be" have

the ability to do such things, ...the only other answer is of course

coincidence !

Re: Vista's ONE good feature

I still want to know what NTFS "multiple streams" are, and just what is that

whopping big, (in addition to the pagefile.sys), "meta-something or other"

can't be defragged unless I do an off-line defrag ? I think I went to NTFS

a while ago because of drive sizes :-)

I did read up on NTFS a while ago, and it all seemed to make sense at the

time of reading it, ....I wonder if I should have tried to remember more of

it !

Re: Vista's ONE good feature

Thankyou, just read through nearly all of it, ...I think I'll have to come

back to that and study it more throughly !

....long gone are the FAT32 days when I'd think nothing of altering a drive

type with Powerquests' pqedit.exe e.g. when I had problems hooking up a boot

drive as slave to get data off it :-) ...I never could get the hang of

just connecting a boot drive as slave, rather, it would never work for me

and as soon as Windows caught sight of 2 bootable partitions it all went

bang, so I used to set the partition as "extended" ...if memory serves :-)

"village" is an abbreviated form of "village idiot" in a round about

kinda way.

One possible fuller version might be: "Your village is calling. It's

missing an idiot."

I'm sure that there are many Kellys of both sexes in the world, but "our"

Kelly, Kelly Theriot, the MVP who posts in these newsgroups regularly, the

Kelly of "Kelly's Korner," is definitely a she. See the link Elmo cited
