jona1634 Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Hello, i'm just looking for some advice. I'm not sure i'm posting this in the right place but it's my first post so please go easy on me. I've recently b given a medion laptop, it's old and didn't work when i received it because of so many viruses etc. I've cleared it and re-installed windows xp service pack 2 and it seems to be running fine. The problem is though that not all the hardware has been installed automatically. The soundcard and network card drivers can't be found. Unfortunately i can't connect to the internet to find them cause the netwrk card isn't installed. I've tried contacting medion but they say they no longer make this laptop so drivers are unavailable. I have access to thew internet but don't seem to be able to find a solution. The laptops a medion mam2010 so anyone with any ideas adivce or help please send me a message. Thanks.. Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Ok - first off is there a place on the back for an Ethernet cable? jona1634 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Hmmm, if that's the one the rj-45 cable goes in then yes. There is also another small one next to it if that helps. Thanks Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 right - can you tell me the exact model please - may be able to lift the driver from somewhere Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.

RandyL Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Look in Device Manager to see if it is listed as to the type. If not try a program to see if you can tell us what it is. SIW PC Wizard Belarc Advisor Everest AIDA32 This is most likely a case of just needing the right drivers since you did a fresh install of Windows. Download the programs to another computer and burn to disk. Install them to your computer from the disk. Let us know. Quote We are all members helping other members. jona1634 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 unfortunately device manager can't tell me exactly what the hardware is called because it's not installed correctly because no drivers. It just says PCI simple communications controller for one and multimedia audio controller for the other. I was hoping someone may have the same computer and be able to tell me what the hardware is. Everything revolves around using the internet to find out but that's the only thing i can't do. Any other ideas?? Thanks Quote

jona1634 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Thanks, that's brilliant an probably got the drivers i need but how do i know which ones i do need? I'm not sure what the hardware is exactly because i can't identify it so what can i do? sorry for all the hassle an thanks for your help Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 - It wont work - just looked to save you the hassle but they are not on there - did the person that gave you the laptop not give you the disks it came with? have you tried plugging the Ethernet into the laptop just to see if the lights on the back flash etc? Seth Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Run a program like Everest as Randy suggested. Everest will be able to identify the motherboard. Please post back with that information. jona1634 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Unfortunately not, the cd's are long gone. I have asked but they were no help so i'm stuck. I've plugged it in but nothing happens, it just starts the new hardware found wizard which is useless without drivers. I've started another post asking if anyone else has the same laptop so that maybe they could tell me what the hardware is in the hope i'll be able to locate the right drivers so we'll see how that goes. Thanks for the help Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Run a program like Everest as Randy suggested. Everest will be able to identify the motherboard. Please post back with that information. I think that the FREE versions of Everest just list the chipset as opposed to the actual MOBO serial Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
Seth Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I think that the FREE versions of Everest just list the chipset as opposed to the actual MOBO serial The free version will show both, provided that it's not some obscure mobo. I've used it a lot to find the mobo info. The last time was a couple of days ago for an HP. HP only had updates for the model, but no actual drivers:confused: Quote Need help with your computer problems? Then why not join Free PC Help. RandyL Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 I agree with Seth that at least one of these programs will identify the needed information in most cases. It is worth trying in almost all cases. Between the lot of the programs one might identify the needed information. Short of that one might need to pull the case and get into the guts if the manufacturer does not supply the info. Quote We are all members helping other members. Dalo Harkin Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 Isn't Medion German or something? as for thr serial number again I doubt that Everest would update someone like Medions list as they are a nobody in the PC world as for HP now thats a different matter Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
jona1634 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Wow wow wow, those last few replies have gone a little over my head. What is the mobo and how will that help me? this seems to have turned into a major problem, i was hoping someone would just be able to give me simple instructions to follow. no offence meant and thanks for everyones help i just thought it would be alot easier. if i open up the laptop where will the hardware be located and will i get the right info of it? i've been told by a guy on the phone at medion that that is my best chance of finding what drivers i need, that's if the drivers exist. Thanks Quote
Dalo Harkin Posted September 5, 2008 Posted September 5, 2008 mobo - acronym of Motherboard :) as for taking the laptop to bits I would not recommend it - again no offence intended but with the way you describe your PC knowledge you may cause more harm than good - have you installed one of the programs that Randy suggested, it may have some info that we need Quote Intel Q6600 @ 4Ghz (Watercooled)Asus P5K premium black pearl4GB OCZ Reaper 8500260GTX Join Free PC Help - Register here Donations are welcome - here PC Build We are all members helping other members. Please return here where you may be able to help someone else. After all, no one knows everything and you may have the answer that someone needs.
jona1634 Posted September 5, 2008 Author Posted September 5, 2008 Fair point i don't want to wreck it, although i am a little better than i sound. But i'll take your advise as you obviously know considerably more than me. I'll run everest when i get back from work and let you know what it says, hopefully something useful. Thanks for all the help Quote
