Hello.

I tried to update my USB driver on my PC. It came up with an error and the mouse and keyboard no longer work. Both are plugged into USB ports. The computer does not have a PS/2 port.

When the computer now starts up it says new hardware found and asks for permission to search for drivers. Can't accept/cancel request due to the mouse/keyboard no longer working.

The computer is an Acer L100 running Windows XP Media Edition.

I tried a reboot. No joy.

Tried reboot in safe mode. Same problem.

The keyboard works fine with the BIOS. USB is enabled in the BIOS.

Any advice would be welcome.

Once the computer is on, unplug the mouse and keyboard, then plug them back in.

Disconnect all usb devices other than the mouse and try it out. If it still doesn't work, unplug it and plug it back it while the computer is on. Try that method with the keyboard as well.

How did you get to the Safe Mode menu if the keyboard isn't working? Well, from that menu, try Last Known Good Configuration.

The keyboard will work in the BIOS as it does not need the drivers from the OS system. ;)

Yup, and I've never seen XP request permission to install a mouse or keyboard.

Is that a wireless mouse and keyboard Lee?

Hello again.

I tried disconnecting all USB devices and using only the mouse or keyboard plugged in. Still no joy.

Tried the Last Known Good Configuration. Still the same problem

Did you try the front ports?

The mouse and keyboard are not wireless, just your normal type USB.

Correction to original post.

The driver the computer is trying to install is for the Universal Serial Bus Controller.

Hello and Welcome to FPCH Lee. :)

Please read the following article from the Microsoft Knowledge Base and perform the recommended troubleshooting instructions. See if they help or not.

USB devices stop working in Windows XP Media Center Edition

Let us know how it goes. Good Luck.

Looked at the article. I couldn't install it even it it was the correct fix. I can't access the computer without a mouse or keyboard.

Thanks for the idea though. I will have a further look around on the web site.

Well that explains why the mouse and keyboard aren't working.

I don't know of any way you're going to be able to fix the problem unless you run a repair installation of XP.

Hmmm...unless you can buy a mouse/keyboard that uses a different port. Perhaps the firewire port. I'll look into it.

Yup. You can purchase a firewire mouse or keyboard.

Then once the USB driver loads, you can go back to using the USB ports.

You're welcome.

Just call around to some computer shops. If they don't have the firewire mouse/keyboard, ask if they have any that use anything other than a USB or PS2 port.

I couldn't find a firewire mouse but I did manage to resolve the problem with ERD Commander 2005. The software allowed me to go back to a previous restore point.

Thanks for all the help. If anybody else manages to have the same problem I hope this update may help them.

Thanks for the update.

I found out about ERD Commander about a month ago and wrote a post about it.

I'll definitely give it a better look.
