Guest Britt Posted August 30, 2007 Posted August 30, 2007 My motherboard died so I installed a new MB and CPU but the new system wouldn't boot to the old ide HD with xp installed. I then installed a new hard drive formatted it and installed xp sp2 on it from which my upgraded system booted fine. However, I cannot access my files that are pass word protected on the ide drive. No matter what I do the new mb will not boot to the old HD. My question is: How do I boot to the new drive with xp and then access password protected files on the secound HD also with xp? Thanks

The new installation of XP caused the use of different Security IDs for all accounts. As a username is merely an alias for an SID, the files do not belong to your new account. Jim

Your sure this will work if the files are password protected? If so I will give it a try. You didn't even say what program you used to create the files and password-protect them. If they are MS Office files, I assume that once you get the files into Vista and open them in whatever Office program you created them that you can simply enter the password to access the document. If they are Office files, you should post in the appropriate Office newsgroup for more specific help with the files. http://aumha.org/nntp.htm - list of MS newsgroups Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!"
