Hi all,

When i turn on my PC sometimes it will shut down half a second later, or it sometimes shuts down while surfing the net - i thought it might be the power supply so i replaced it but i am still having the same problems  Could it be the mother board?

Anyone with any ideas?

Hello Alkis

Welcome to FPCH

It sounds to me like some things overheating which could be the cpu heatsink.

Take the side off and give it a could clean out with a can of compressed air.

Thanks for the quick response

I have tried that - i have a program that came with my asus p5nd2-sli mother board called pc probe 2: my temps are as follows cpu 24c. and thre mother board 35c.

Can you think of anything else it could be?

Thanks again :)

Ok if the box is clean the it's a PSU issue.

How old is the pc?

Right you replaced it.

What size is the PSU now?

Are you trying to run any massively system intensive games at all?

1.

Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.

2.

Click the Advanced tab.

3.

Under Startup and Recovery, click Settings to open the Startup and Recovery dialog box.

4.

Clear the Automatically restart check box, and click OK the necessary number of times.

5.

Restart your computer for the settings to take effect.

Now when you go to shut down and a fatal error occurs, you'll at least see it and it won't cause an automatic reboot.

Post back with the full error that will be produced.

asus p5nd2 -sli mother board

Pentium D 3.4 socket 775 (i use to have it over clocked to 4.0 for 3 months) that might be it?

Corsair 2gb ram

hiper 580w power supply

250g western digital

Inno3d 256mb 7600gt graphics card

i use to play WOW 5 hours a day and call of duty 4 alot but not anymore.

1 month ago when i use to tap the pc it use to shut down so i checked all connections and they were fine so i changed the power supply - when i tap the computer now it doesnt shut down so that eliminates the connection problem.

The Mobo should not be running at 35 degrees, is the board passively cooled (heatsinks) or is it actively cooled (fans)

you need more fans blowing air over the MOBO -

try and clean the fans with a paintbrush too if you can - have you checked the fans are turning - I used to have an ASUS old socket 939 board and the fan broke - I took the fan out and the heatsink itself was perfectly sufficient for cooling, but it needed an additional fan pointing at it as there was a graphics card covering the most of it.

Slightly confused now. there is a heatsink on the processer with a good fan. should i attach another fan on the outer case to cool the motherboard?

Right on the actual Motherboard there is a Southbridge and a Northbridge both are cooled by fans or heatsinks, the ones on this pic for example are passively cooled - the big black blocks under and to the left of the CPU and the one near the CMOS battery

If its getting hot - point a fan at the southbridge first - the black one on yours and see how you go - I am guessing that your GPU covers most of it and that will not be helping at all :)

Good news - there will be a thermal setting in the BIOS to shut it down at a certain temp you can also up that a tiny bit if needed. ;)
