password problem

I have an XP Home SP2 PC that is giving me problems with user account

passwords. The PC had a rather nasty spyware infection on it, and so I

proceeded to clean it up. After everything was cleaned up, I rebooted the PC

and all was ok. The next time I rebooted however, every user account on the

PC (5 plut Administrator) is asking for a password, and there is no password

on any of the accounts. I went into Safe Mode, and even the Administrator

account is asking for a password. I downloaded and ran a tool called the

Windows NT/2K/XP password change utility, which I have used before to reset

unknown passwords on user accounts, but the utility says that all the

accounts on the computer have blank passwords. I tried a repair install of

XP, but that did not help. How can I get logged back into this PC? Thanks

for any ideas....!

if we dont have the passoword to login

however a small workaround

intiate a repair install

at 39 mins remaining

press shift+f10

u will get the command prompt

type control userpasswords2

select each user account and click reset passowrd

your passoword will be reset ..

I tried the blank password, but no help. I will try your workaround and see

what happens. Thanks for the idea. I will let you know how it goes.

RE: password problem

Well, I was able to open the userpasswords2 and I couldn't reset the user

passwords on the other accounts, but I was able to create a new user account

and get in that way. But I still cannot get into the other accounts. If I

go into the Control Panel and go to User Accounts, I can see all the other

accounts and they all say they are password protected. When I try to remove

the password on the account, I just get a message that says "Windows cannot

remove the password." Any more ideas?

Boot the machine.

Press CTRL+ALT+DEL twice at the Welcome screen.

Type in the name of the administrator account.

Leave the password blank if one isn't used.

Press Enter.

I cannot get into the Administrator account either. It also says I must

enter a password, even though there was not one before. I can access the

profiles that are "locked" out from the new profile I created during the XP

repair install, I just cannot log into thoes profiles.

RE: password problem

I will probably do that. I cannot think of anything else that might work.

Thanks for your assistance. If you can think of anything else, feel free to

let me know! Thanks again.

Re: password problem

Somehow the link supplied by Rajesh has 2 .com's in it, so here's one without:

How to copy data from a corrupted user profile to a new profile

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151/en-us

On another note you could try resetting the password(s) another way which can have

a bad outcome if you use any type of encryption. If any encryption is used, your OS

will more than likely need to be reinstalled fresh if you use/do this, otherwise it's

straight forward and easy to do. I've used it numerous times and never had a

problem, the again encryption wasn't being used either.

Follow the instructions carefully, better yet copy/print them to reference as you

run through the steps.

Reset password even if you don’t know the password
