The full message is:

 

We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start

successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused

this.

 

 

This occurs when selecting any of the safemode's or a restore point.

Windows hangs when booting into normal mode.

 

<http://support.microsoft.com/kb/309481> gives a solution which rests

on being able to boot, if I read it correctly :(

 

How to approach this please? Repair?

the commands you can

use are:

 

chkdsk

fixboot

 

then exit and reboot without

cd....
