Guest MarcusB Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 We want to implement easy backup for our users loging to our domain from laptops and desktops. We was trying Symantec BackupExec with DLO option but it is not what we looking for exactly. We want that backup will copy files from some folders on laptops to the share on file server in their original form, thus we can recover files and backup them later manually without any extra software. It will be great if some of you know any software wchich can do the job. /Marcus
Guest Danny Sanders Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Re: Backup for Desktop and laptops Best practice is to create a share on a file server for each user and then train them to open from that share and save to that share. Then backup the file server nightly. This way you only need a license for backup software for the server not every laptop and desktop on the network. hth DDS "MarcusB" <marcusb@llunet.se> wrote in message news:uRigRZ76HHA.4348@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > We want to implement easy backup for our users loging to our domain from > laptops and desktops. > We was trying Symantec BackupExec with DLO option but it is not what we > looking for exactly. Guest MarcusB Posted August 31, 2007 Posted August 31, 2007 Re: Backup for Desktop and laptops The problem is that not all users are so good in it and many of them use computers offline home thus they need to save file locally. I need some software which can do the things in the background. So far we was using Syncback for synchronizing folders on laptops and server and robocopy. But I want software with client - server with local agents and in real time. Whenever file will change agent will copy it to the server. /Marcus Danny Sanders wrote: > Best practice is to create a share on a file server for each user and then > train them to open from that share and save to that share. Offline files is the answer to laptop users. When out of the office they have access to their files. When they reconnect to the network the laptop replicates the changes to the server. Before they log off it replicates the files again. This is free. See: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/900701/en-us But if you want to spend the money, just Google laptop backup. Tons of companies provide this. hth DDS "MarcusB" <marcusb@llunet.se> wrote in message news:%23sJzEF%236HHA.980@TK2MSFTNGP06.phx.gbl... > The problem is that not all users are so good in it and many of them use > computers offline home thus they need to save file locally. > I need some software which can do the things in the background. > So far we was using Syncback for synchronizing folders on laptops and > server and robocopy. Guest MarcusB Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 Re: Backup for Desktop and laptops We already bought Symantec with DLO but it do not meet our expectation. We need simple realitime file copying after they change, with central managament and agents on all clients. /Marcus Danny Sanders wrote: >> The problem is that not all users are so good in it > > You know your users better than I do, but I've found that most users can > learn this one simple step of saving files to the server. > > > many of them use >> computers offline home thus they need to save file locally. >> I need some software which can do the things in the background. > > Offline files is the answer to laptop users. I believe you also need to disable Version control. mind you, you say its for simple recovery, DLO does provide a very simple recovery option that infact can be pushed out from the server. This is especially useful for a laptop user, they can call in from a remotely location, and as long as they are on the VPN, you can push the recovered file to them as needed. DLO will also do immediate/live file updating if you use the "Whenever a file changes" option. upgrade any machiens are that arnt currently NTFS to use NTFS, and this option will work flawlessly.
Guest jott Posted January 4, 2008 Posted January 4, 2008 Re: Backup for Desktop and laptops Have you had success with recreating Symantec DLO files and folders on the server in a readable form? I am trying the same thing on DLO (version 11d). I set up a test backup selection with compression, encryption, and delta file transfer turned off, and revision control set to 1 revision in the network user data folder and 0 revisions in the desktop user data folder. I’ve found that even with these settings, DLO still adds a string (e.g., [00g078jB2udkH7000000gE]) in front of each file name stored on the server, and it also adds a string of extended characters to the beginning of each file’s contents. Symantec’s support team did not think it was possible to do this, so if you know of any settings I can change to accomplish what was discussed in this message thread, I would really appreciate any insight you have! Thanks in advance. vidguide2@gmail.com;3135810 Wrote: > > DLO can recreate the files and structure in a perfectly useable form > if you turn off compression and encryption.
