Hello and Welcome to FPCH Rich. :)

I will try my best to assist you with your problem. Can you please tell us what camera are you trying to plug in? Also, do you have any of the discs or drivers that came with the camera?

Have you tried installing the software from the CD that came with the camera? It will most probably contain the drivers / firmware that are needed to connect the camera with the computer.

If not, then please try so and see if the camera is recognized by the computer. Good Luck.

That is strange indeed because if you have already installed the drivers for the camera, then the computer should recognize the device straight away and shouldn't open the "New Hardware Wizard" at all. Are you sure you have installed the drivers for the camera?

As you should have already guessed, I am no expert in these matters so please bear with me till I search for a solution or till the other techs get online. Thank you for your patience and co-operation. :)

Hello Rich. After a brief search, I found the RAW codec for the camera on the following site.

Canon RAW Codec 1.3

Please download the codec from the above site and install it on your computer. Make sure the camera is unplugged at that time. After the installation is complete, please reboot your computer.

Now, try and connect the camera to the computer. See if it helps or not. Good Luck.

You may want to bring it back to the shop as the problem should be under their warranty. If not, can you try the camera in another computer? Also, do other usb devices work? Did you try a different usb port?

Right click on "My Computer" and choose Manage>Device Manager. Click on the + sign to the left of USB Controllers. For each item in that heading, right click and choose Uninstall (not every item will have an uninstall option). When complete, restart the computer and the USB controllers will re-install.

Hi

I agree with seth try what he suggested, have you tried other USB devices do they freeze your computer?

are you using the USB at the back of your pc (connected to the mainboard near the mouse and keyboars connections) or the front USB ports built into your case.
