I think seths avice should be followed. Backup and reinstall.

So many problems that the OS is probably corrupt. Possibly due to a failing drive but it does work in safe mode so hopefully it isn't the drive.

Fixing just some of the problems is a complete waste of effort. I doubt that it can even be done but if one was to attempt it it would be all or nothing.

No offence but you haven't even followed the advice to remove P2P and remove two of the three Antivirus programs you have. That's a simple thing to do. It would get extremely complicated after that.

Please do yourself a favor and cut your losses by following seths advice.

I guess I'll have to do that then if it'll fix all the problems. Will try and start backing up my files on my external hard drive later today. I may have the discs I had from when It told me to make a backup but will try and do it again in safe mode anyway. Once I do that what do I have to do? The laptop didn't come with any discs or software to install - first time I started it up it started installing everything itself.

Can I reformat it myself or is it something only a computer repair shop can do. I will be in Switzerland near Geneva for the next few weeks and would get it done there if anyone knows of somewhere I can get it done there, or knows of someone who can help.

As usuall the Acer support site is experiencing problems at the moment so I can't check the manuals at the moment. Typical for Acer.

It does appear that the the Aspire 5670 series has the eRecovery option which means you need to reinstall using that option not the CD's if you can't find them. Keep in mind that the CD's have to be the ones for reinstalling Windows not ones for installing drivers and such. However I can't supply the steps at this time or verify that as Acer downloads aren't working at the moment. Again.

Guides and Manuals should give you some recovery options when they can be accessed. Sorry for the Acer delay.

How to reformat Acer Aspire laptop

I have an Acer Aspire 5672 with Windows XP Home Edition. It didn't come with any discs - everything was installed when I first started it up. It has been having problems and have been told on here the best thing to do is to try and reformat it.

What do I have to do to reformat? So far I have started backing up all my personal files in safe mode onto my external hard drive - and cant start up normally as password screen has a problem.

Do I have to backup any other files for reformatting? And also is it possible to create the backup discs while in safe mode as I had made them before but dont know where they are - I know cd burner works - but not completely sure where to do the backup again.

Can anyone help with this

As usuall I can't access the Acer support site again. This is their site not me. I do have a 5670 pdf file on hand however.

It does seem that it's capable to create the restore cd's and you said you did but can't find them. This is usually a one shot deal and you can't create them twice. As you have created them you might be out of luck. I don't know if safe mode can create cd's but I doubt it.

On the off chance you can this is taken from the manual.

Create factory default image CD

When the System CD and Recovery CD are not available, you can create them by

using this feature.

1 Boot to Windows XP.

2 Press <Alt> + <F10> to open the Acer eRecovery Management utility.

3 Enter the password to proceed. The default password is six zeros.

4 In the Acer eRecovery Management window, select Recovery settings and

click Next.

5 In the Recovery settings window, select Burn image to disk and click Next.

6 In the Burn image to disk window, select 1. Factory default image or

2. Application CD and click Next.

7 Follow the instructions on screen to complete the process.

Personally though I think your hard drive is going out given the amount of time it took to get into safe mode. Since you have your data backed up you should consider getting a new computer or contacting Acer on replacing the drive.

Did this but didn't have to make any discs but had problems starting up still - found help on fixya.com i think and said it was my battery and that I shoud remove it. All works fine now and have to buy new battery and it appears to be dead. Thanks for the help

We're glad you got it fixed cwaddell and thanks for letting us know. The information will be useful.

To clarify you said in another thread that you reinstalled first and still had problems until you removed the battery. Given the nature of the different issues the reinstall was still a good idea. A real pain I know.

Your data is now backed up and you are upgrading your security. These are both good things to do. If you can create the recovery disks please do so just in case.

Once again thanks for taking the time to let us know.

Yes all working fine now and thanks to everyone for the help. Already noticed some of the other problems have been fixed from reformatting and is working much faster too. Will try and create recovery discs but think I know where original ones I made were.
