Guest Sean Youngblood Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 I just recently installed Win 98 SE - I previously had win 98 - I did so because I purchased a Wireless Lan PCI adapter and when i attempted to install I received a message that I needed Windows 98 SE - when I installed 98 SE - I attempted to install the Wireless Lan PCI adapter and again received the error that I needed to have 98 SE or newer version of windows installed on the computer - I checked the system properties and they list the operating system as Windows 98 Second Edition - I assume there is a system registry file that did not update and therefore that is likely preventing me from installing the Wireless Lan PCI adapter - does anybody know what I need to do in order to change all files to reflect the correct version of windows??

You could Google, there are many sites that offer all the win updates besides MS, and they are usually much easier to navigate. You MAY find out you need to do both. But others will know more I am sure. It's late and I haven't replied to anything here in a while. Don't want anyone to forget about me. So I apologize if you consider reading this a waste of time which it kind of maybe perhaps is. (I am actually surprised you can get wireless to work with 98SE at all.) -- "This is not nuclear. Guest Jeff Richards Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 Re: error that I needed to have 98 SE or newer version of windows That's the sort of question you would have to ask the manufacturer. If your system properties say that you are using W98SE then it seems that the installer is using something else to identify the OS, and it's anyone's guess as to what that might be. Or, the message might actually mean that some other necessary component (something to do with the network, perhaps) is missing. Again, only the manufacturer would know. An upgraded system is just as genuine as a fresh install, unless the software is using some non-standard testing. -- Jeff Richards MS MVP (Windows - Shell/User) "Sean Youngblood" <SeanYoungblood@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:C817C9BC-5131-4B89-88D5-50C33ABEFC2C@microsoft.com... >I just recently installed Win 98 SE - I previously had win 98 - I did so > because I purchased a Wireless Lan PCI adapter and when i attempted to > install I received a message that I needed Windows 98 SE - when I > installed > 98 SE - I attempted to install the Wireless Lan PCI adapter and again > received the error that I needed to have 98 SE or newer version of windows > installed on the computer - I checked the system properties and they list > the > operating system as Windows 98 Second Edition - I assume there is a system > registry file that did not update and therefore that is likely preventing > me > from installing the Wireless Lan PCI adapter - does anybody know what I > need > to do in order to change all files to reflect the correct version of > windows??

This appears to depend on the wireless ISP -- not on the Operating System. Rogers Cable (big Canadian CATV and ISP utility) has a fully automatic system that works well with Win98SE. You just 1. Power up the antenna module and orient it for maximum signal strength (shown by indicator LEDs). 2. Make the other connections. 3. Connection with the ISP via wireless is then automatic and the user need input only the startup password (provided by the ISP). -- Don Phillipson Carlsbad Springs (Ottawa, Canada)

Found some software looks at this registry key to determine what version is installed: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion] "SubVersionNumber"=" A " If you are familiar with using the registry editor, check to see if this key looks exactly as mine about, that is " SPACE A SPACE " If that doesn't work try "A" (no spaces) If that doesn't work try " A" (one space to left) If that doesn't work try "A " (one space to right) Forgot which 'magic' combination made it work but one of them did. BTW, may have to reboot after each registry change ... don't remember. Guest Bob Harris Posted September 3, 2007 Posted September 3, 2007 Re: error that I needed to have 98 SE or newer version of windows I read once that Microsoft's Windows Update used the version of Internet Explorer to determine whether the machine was a PC or an Apple. IE 5.5 or less was interpreted as being an Apple. Wireless adapters often use IE to change their settings, so possibly the message is really about the version of IE, not about the operating system itself. If you are not already using it, try updating to IE6: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/ie6/default.mspx Note: Do not attempt to install version 7 on an machine running less than XP ! As an aside, remember to run Windows Update, since there may be additional patches available for 98SE, which were not offered when you had plain 98. Otherwise, go to the adapter's support site and check FAQs, tips&tricks, or search on "problems", or search on some of the exact text of the error message. By the way, do you have the latest installer for the adapter? The one on the CD that probably came with the card might be out of date. Check for the possibility of a newer version at the adapter's support site. If none of that helps, try sending an email to the adapter customer support, being as specific as possible about the PC, its recent history, the adapter, and the exact error message.
