How much memory DO you have? Even 128 should run 98, let alone

256.

Your memory may be bad.

Go to a used bookstore and get a few DOS 6.x and Win 95/98 books

for a few bucks and read the relevant sections on autoexec.bat

and config.sys in c:\ root and win.ini and system.ini in windows

root.

Or you could Google for "98 startup memory problems" or some

combination thereof.

It's just to much to go into here, and there could be several

things wrong. And I'm not that much of an expert on this kind of

a problem.

I will not mention the tired old complaint that all caps is

considered shouting, but it IS hard to read, so next time,

please...

Try this:

Boot to DOS or use your Win98 Startup diskette.

Enter C:

At the C:\ prompt enter:

Edit Config.sys.

Put these 3 lines at the top of the file.

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS

DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\EMM386.EXE NOEMS

DOS=HIGH,UMB

Use ALT +F then S to save it then ALT+F then X to exit.

Remove the diskette if you used one.

Reboot by entering CTRL +ALT+DEL

1. You can edit these two startup files in DOS

(i.e. from a floppy DOS boot and using DOS EDIT.)

But Win98 does not need them. (They are present

only as "legacy" from Win98 which did need them.)

2. Similarly you can run from DOS RAMTEST or

some other utility to test your memory chips.

3. You might be able to start Win98 in Safe Mode

by holding down the right key during reboot (probably

F4 or F8 or Control.) This loads Win98 without drivers

and with a 650x480 screen to enable reconfiguration.

I know you may be frustrated but please do not post in all caps and if your

keyboard is broken then buy a new one or have one given to you by a friend.

All caps is equivalent to shouting in this newsgroup. Thank you and have a

nice day!

Start the computer, tap the F8 key repeatedly until the startup menu appears

and select "Command Prompt only". Type the following two lines, then

reboot.

rename c:\autoexec.bat autoexec.bak

rename c:\config.sys config.bak
