Guest Neil Jarman Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Hi, Does anyone else have my problem - lack of space on OS partition? When I first created this server there was loads of room, but what with additional applications and 2 years of windows / exchange updates, I'm desparate for space. My question is: can I re partition the disk (it has 2) into one large one? If so, do I need 3rd party software. many thanks, NEIL
Guest net_admin Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 RE: disk space and partitions Yep, it's possible, see this link: http://www.thefreecountry.com/utilities/partitioneditors.shtml -- NetAdmin <São Paulo, BR> "Das ist nicht mein bier... arschloch."
Guest Newell White Posted September 6, 2007 Posted September 6, 2007 RE: disk space and partitions Do you need to re-partition? We run our DC (hosting file server and App Server for database serving entire design, manufacture, and sales functions) with 7.84 Gbyte of C: drive, currently 1.54Gbyte is free. I freed up space on the C: drive by following steps: 1) 1.5Gbyte - Move most of C:\pagefile.sys to D: Create a new file D:\pagefile.sys, min = 1536Mbyte, max = 1536Mbyte Modify file C:\pagefile.sys, min = 128Mbyte, max = 128Mbyte Use regedit.exe to set HKLM\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Mnager\Memory Management ClearPageFileAtShutdown DWORD 0 => 1 Takes effect when you re-boot. 2) 1Gbyte - Move all folders C:\windows\$nt*uninst* to D:\exc_windows\ You can't uninstall MS updates to your operating system without moving them back, but in 2 years in this job I have never wanted to! 3) 0.65Gbyte - move app software If you have install CD or download, uninstall from C:\Program Files\ and re-install in D:\moved_programs\ These changes have been in place for at least 12 months with no problems. -- Newell White "Neil Jarman" wrote: > Hi, > > Does anyone else have my problem - lack of space on OS partition? > > When I first created this server there was loads of room, but what with > additional applications and 2 years of windows / exchange updates, I'm > desparate for space. > > My question is: can I re partition the disk (it has 2) into one large one? > If so, do I need 3rd party software. > > many thanks, > > NEIL > > >
Guest Mike Bailey Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Re: disk space and partitions I ran into this same situation and it seemed to open a can of worms. I have a Raid 5 system. One person recommended Partition Manager. I talked with their tech support and found it was not a solution for me though because their software only works on Basic disks and not Dynamic like you have with a raid system. This is also a program that you can download from Microsoft's site called Diskpart.exe. It's a command line program and was a little scary to use for me. I ended up added an additional drive to my array and add the space onto the D: drive. I did some of the other things the other poster said and cleaned up my C: except that I just deleted all the uninstall files. I didn't move my page files though and that sounds like a good idea. Another thing that I did buy was Disk Keeper to keep my drives defraged in real time. Good luck, Mike Neil Jarman wrote: > Hi, > > Does anyone else have my problem - lack of space on OS partition? > > When I first created this server there was loads of room, but what with > additional applications and 2 years of windows / exchange updates, I'm > desparate for space. > > My question is: can I re partition the disk (it has 2) into one large one? > If so, do I need 3rd party software. > > many thanks, > > NEIL > >
