Well when my friend bought their laptop round the internet could connect anywhere in my house (I think from the downstairs pc??)

The only way this can happen is if you have a wireless router, or if you have a device in the PC downstairs that acts as a HUB - some of the ABIT MOBO's supported this but whilst it is acting as a HUB that PC cannot use the internet.

I think you have a router

If you don't have a wireless router, you may be seeing the wireless signal from one of your neighbors. How close are your neighbors?

This is true, but I would have presumed that the persons neighbours have some kind of protection enabled and as it was accessed to use the net find this unlikeley

Well seeing as you won't answer my question Boothy all I can deduce is that you must be using your neighbours internet connection.

We don't want you getting all confused when he finds out and locks it down.

Best of luck.

I'm confused here Boothy

On one hand you say your up and running which is impossible unless you have hard wired the laptop to the modem and your unsure whether you have a router.

I turned on the wireless and got a connection to the internet, but it's not mine.

It's someone elses internet i'm using.

So i need to get a router for my internet at home don't i???

Yes Boothy

Using your neighbours internet connection in a word is theft of his ISP costs.

We can't say that he should know better but it should be your moral responsibility to inform him of his vulnerability.

Well to be honest i'm not sure where the signal is coming from but i will speak to both my neighbours.

I'm going to get a router tomorrow.

Any idea's where i can get a decent one?

Are they all the same?

The router comes with software Boothy, install that and turn the laptop on and the laptop will find it.
