Office 2007 edition for TS

Hi. I've read some conflicting messages about which version of Office 2007

can be installed on Windows Server 2003 with terminal services enabled.

From what I can gather, both Enterprise Edition and Professional Plus

edition will work because these two versions use Volume License Keys and do

not require the typical license activation process that you would typically

go thru with the other Office 2007 editions.

 

Does this sound correct? Has anyone run into any troubles with getting

Professional Plus edition installed and working on a Windows 2003 terminal

server?

Hi Meinolf. That's a great resource I'll definitely hang onto.

 

Although the article doesn't specifically state which Office 2007 versions

will work in a terminal server environment, it does say only a version of

Office which uses a volume license product key and doesn't require

activation can be used. Then over on the Office site, it states that

Professional Plus is only available through volume licensing. I'll take

that to mean that if I purchase Professional Plus under volume licensing

(which is apparently the only available choice) then standard activation

would not be required and there will not be any error messages stating that

our copy of Office cannot be used on a terminal server.

 

This is at least what the general consensus seems to be among Office 2007

users. It would be nice if Microsoft would officially state exactly which

versions of Office 2007 do work and which don't work with terminal services.

Maybe it is stated somewhere and I just haven't seen it yet.

Hi Ben,

 

Let me confirm for you that the following versions will run under

Terminal Services (from direct experience):

 

- Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007

- Microsoft Office Enterprise 2007

 

It is possible that there are other volume versions (such as Standard)

that will work as well, however, I have not tried them.

 

For example, let's assume that you need Pro Plus English version

through Open Business licensing. Here are sample part numbers:

 

79P-00123 Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 License

79P-00021 Microsoft Office Professional Plus 2007 Media Kit

 

As always I recommend you run tests to determine the CPU, RAM,

Disk I/O, and bandwidth required to support the number of concurrent

TS users you are planning. For example, Office 2007 can use

substantially more bandwidth which may be an issue over limited links

such as typical Internet connections.

Thanks for sharing that information -- it alleviates a lot of the stress

I've felt trying to compile the most accurate information as possible :-)

 

Your point about the bandwidth that Office 2007 might use during a TS

session is interesting. I haven't yet used Office 2007 and was thinking

getting the latest Office version might be best to put on a new Windows

Server 2003 installation. But I wasn't aware of the increased bandwidth

demand and might take a look at putting Office 2003 on the server instead.

Our internet connection speed is fairly standard and I wouldn't want to slow

down user sessions because of Office 2007 -- especially when our users seem

to be able to do everything they need with Office 2003.

 

I'd be interested in finding out how or why Office 2007 might use more

bandwidth in a TS session, since I had always thought that for the most

part, the only data that is sent to and from the terminal server and the

client is the video, keyboard and mouse I/O which would seem to be the same

regardless of the application running.
