TS Session staying active

Is there a way to keep a session in TS active when you are away from your

computer?

 

We have set idol session to disconnect after 1 hour of inactivity, but we

have users who's sessions stay active hours after they have gone home.

 

Do any of you know how this is possible? Is there 3rd party software?

I get the impression you need to discuss this with your administrators or

whoever is the equivalent of administrators. They will know the answer to

the question of why some user's sessions stay active hours after they have

gone home. I suspect that if they wanted to allow you more time they could.

 

I don't know for sure, but I suspect it is very easy for a Windows programer

to do what you are asking. I would not however want to assist someone to

violate an owner's intent, and the administrators are of course agents of

the owners.

Hi,

 

Which Server OS are you using 2003, 2000?

 

Make sure you enable TS Keepalives on the server. For

2003 this is accomplished via Group Policy setting whereas

2000 requires a registry addition.

 

When looking at Terminal Services Manager (tsadmin.exe) does

their Idle Time column show as a dot, or does it have a time listed?

Make sure you refresh the display in order to get accurate

information.

 

Where did you set your Idle timeout and Session disconnect/end

options, and what *exactly* did you set them to?

We are using 2003, and in TSManager there time stays as the dash or dot.

 

We set the idol time out in AD.

What is the OS on the client workstation and what is the

client software (type and version) being used to connect to

the server?

 

When this occurs again, right-click on one of the users

who should not be Active and choose Status. Are the

Frames increasing over time?

 

Have you tried Remote Controlling one of these sessions

in order to see if there is any "real" activity?

 

When you physically visit one of these workstations during

this time what do you see happening?

Our users are all on XP Pro (with all of the latest service packs and

updates). They are all using Remote Desktop Connections v5.1.2600.2180

(mstsc.exe) to connect to our Terminal servers.

 

I have looked at the sessions when they are supposed to be idle and there is

no new frames coming in. There is also no new activity when I connect to

these sessions when the account is idle.

Strange.

 

Do you have refresh set to Manual in Terminal Services Manager?

This will not affect the actual Idle time/Disconnect mechanism but

can affect the display.

 

Has the server always acted this way? Do you see it working

correctly (in regards to Idle Time incrementing) at least some

of the time?

 

Did you enable TS Keepalives via Group Policy like I mentioned

before?

 

Also, I would recommend running the matching version of the

Remote Desktop Client on the workstations. This is not necessary

to make the Idle Time function but is a good general idea. The

install for it is located here on your 2003 server:

 

C:\WINDOWS\system32\clients\tsclient\win32\msrdpcli.msi

 

For reference sake, what is the exact version of 2003 including

service pack, if any, that you are using? Please don't forget to

mention if it is R2, standard, enterprise, x64, etc. Was this an

upgrade install over an existing Server 2000? Did you use an

OEM (or one you made) unattended install?
