Guest kimiraikkonen Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 I've been using Windows 2000 for a long time which is more bug-free but i beleive that i haven't made a mistake to repair my current XP installation due to a problem about Outlook Express. I booted CD normally, then proceeded to available OS list, OK so far, then clicked "R" to repair current-existing XP but then setup started to copy files, not over, then proceeded to standard installation screens including "key entry" , windows component registration and it re-installed my stable drivers with crappy Microsoft's drivers!!! I haven't repaired an XP installation till today, but i beleive that's not a "repair". Am i wrong or what's XP repair called? Thanks for reading.
Guest Jupiter Jones [MVP] Posted September 4, 2007 Posted September 4, 2007 Re: I chose "repair" but XP "re-installed" That sounds like a Repair Installation. Is all your data still there? If so, then you accomplished what you set out to do. If your data is all gone, then you probably performed a Clean Installation. -- Jupiter Jones [MVP] http://www3.telus.net/dandemar http://www.dts-l.org "kimiraikkonen" <kimiraikkonen85@gmail.com> wrote in message news:1188949301.341717.307250@o80g2000hse.googlegroups.com... > I've been using Windows 2000 for a long time which is more bug-free > but i beleive that i haven't made a mistake to repair my current XP > installation due to a problem about Outlook Express. > > I booted CD normally, then proceeded to available OS list, OK so > far, > then clicked "R" to repair current-existing XP but then setup > started > to copy files, not over, then proceeded to standard installation > screens including "key entry" , windows component registration and > it > re-installed my stable drivers with crappy Microsoft's drivers!!! > > I haven't repaired an XP installation till today, but i beleive > that's > not a "repair". But i got furious that the repair shouldn't be this. It must only re-install *necessary* files and leave user settings and DRIVERS same. However outlook came back again, but it's weird for that kind of perform under the name of "repair". Thanks for responding.
Guest AJR Posted September 5, 2007 Posted September 5, 2007 Re: I chose "repair" but XP "re-installed" Common misconception about the "Repair" function - If setup "finds" a Windows installation(s) it will list the installation and give the option to "repair" the selected found installation or proceed with a "clean" install. Select the "Repair" offer and setup will proceed as a complete "upgrade" installation. Since the registry need to be changed there would likely be more grief if XP setup tried to guess which drivers to leave and which to restore which means the problem may still be there later. You should make regular backups or disk images so your PC can be exactly as you like in case of some failure system restore can't fix. It's just as quick if not quicker to restore. The repair option is really a last chance option in many cases. It's not quite a fresh install. Usually most are more concerned with getting their data back, as they have Windows already on disk, (or can get it).

Repair's mean must be register DLLs, repair corrupter console or user settings, network connections etc... But after repairing it also updated no no downgraded my drivers horribly. Clean install means installation after formatting partition, but what's the real difference between "re-installation upon existing XP" and "repair"? What does repair do less? Thanks.
