After two years in development, VLC, the popular open-source player has just moved from the 0.8.x versions to version 0.9.2. The newly updated software remains small and lightweight while bringing a new interface for Windows and Linux systems as well as new inputs, more codec support and new on the fly audio and video filters.

In addition to playing just about anything you can throw at it, VLC can also transcode videos and songs from one format to another – sans watermarks or limitations whatsoever. Head over to our download section to grab your copy for Mac, Windows or linux systems.

Thanks for putting it up Dalo. Co-incidentally, I downloaded the program just 2 days ago and now they have updated it! I will have to download it again now.

What do you guys use it for - I have never needed anything more than WMP and I also use Intervideo windvd for watching movies as the audio is far superior to WMP - just curious :)

I had a problem a while back where WMP would not play certain files, I forget now but Seth put me on to VLC and I have not looked back.

The only files that I have seen that people need specific stuff for is MKV files - and that was because they were downloaded off the net (I told him that they were probably bad and he watched them on BBC iplayer or whatever it is) - muppet he was (looked like Gonzo, funnily enough :D)

Well you can't go by my experience. Until I got Vista I was using WMP7 which would not play some files of course and I didn't have a DVD drive.

WMP11 works good but I use the Media Center for DVD. Of course having 5 speakers helps the sound.

I use VLC as it can play a variety of video formats. Besides, its lightweight and simple. You can also configure it to play Audio and Playlist files, but I use Winamp for that.
