Access to folder denied!!

Recommended Posts

I have Administrator Rights to our home computer, but recently I noticed that

I could notice access my sons folder. I tried to open the folder and and it

basically said access denied. All of the users on my computer are have

"Limited Access" and have no administrative rights. How is this folder being

locked and why can' t the Administrator obtain access to the folder?

Just because you have administrative rights does not automatically mean 'all

doors and secrets will be revealed to you without effort on your part'...

;-)

Any user on any system can change the file/folder permissions in such a way

that other users - including administrators - do not have access to them.

However - *as* the system administrator you *can* take ownership of said

files/folders at your whim. This does EXACTLY what it says it does - TAKES

ownership from whomever had it before and grants it to your account -

meaning unless you give rights back to the other user - it may be noticed

they no longer can do things they could do before with their files/folders.

I'm admin of my XP pro but under recovery console(bootable XP CD)

whenever i remove or copy files it says "access denied". WHY?

Because your son is smarter than you and modified the NTFS folder

permissions. Most likely removed you and the administrator account from

accessing.

Because those files/folders are ones that the administrator *may not* have

access to.

Read *carefully* - do not just skim the page and start following steps.

There is important information there dependent on the version of Windows XP

No security tab? Then it must not be an NTFS partition.

My personal D: partition is NTFS and has no "security" tab. Only has

"general", "sharing", "customize". Under recovery console i enter

admin password, i enter prompt with no problem. The problem starts

from now on. For example if i prompt "del something" ("someting"

refers to a kind of folder") i get "access denied". But while under

normal XP operating with Windows explorer there is no problem about

accessing.

Try this:

http://www.petri.co.il/recovery_console_access_to_other_partitions.htm

About the missing security tab. This is only visible when simple file

sharing is disabled (xp pro). Xp home users needs to boot into safe mode

Because, as a sort of "Check and Balance," even an administrator cannot

access another user's private files without first taking ownership of

those files and granting himself access. This naturally locks out the

original user, alerting him that someone has accessed his private files.

Hi kimiraikkonen

It's because the Recovery Console will only let you access the root

folder (C:\ probably), the folder Windows is in (probably C:\Windows)

and its sub-folders, the Cmdcons folder and removable media drives.

I'm puzzled as to why you'd want to use it to delete files?

H Nightow,

Thanks it's good to be confirmed as i've seen what you said in an MS

article. The reason i want to delete my personal files is to open some

space or delete some junky files what i cannot delete under Windows

due to file sharing or interfering like that.

Re: Access to folder denied!!

Hello again

I think it'd be much easier to try to delete them from a Command window.

If you get an error message that access is denied or the file is in use,

try this way:

Open a Command window.

Open Task Manager. In its Processes tab, highlight explorer.exe and

click on End Process. Your desktop and taskbar will disappear. *Leave

Task Manager open* while you return to the Command window.

Now delete the files and folders you want to remove. When you've

finished, go back to Task Manager. Click on the Applications tab and

then the New Task button and in the box that pops up type explorer.exe

and click OK.

Hope this helps. If it doesn't work, please let us know, as there are a

few other tricks to try on files that won't delete.
