Re: Legit Copy of Windows but no Activation Key

Try to activate it, then select "Contact Microsoft Telephone Support" (or

whatever it is) in the dialog boxes. They will ask you for some information

and validate the numbers that you specify. If all is well, they "MAY" give

you an activation key. The reason I say this is that this happened to me a

month ago and it worked well. The reason for the "MAY" is that they may

determine that it was activated "TOO MANY" times and may refuse. Although,

I've not had this problem.

Hope it helps...

Re: Legit Copy of Windows but no Activation Key

All you have is the CD, it isn't a legit copy UNTIL you have a key.

Microsoft support will provide a key for retail copies of Windows XP, IF

you provide proof of purchase. Since all you have is a CD you are not

going to have much luck there.

Re: Legit Copy of Windows but no Activation Key

You are correct Bob; however I have found that if you have a legit copy of

XP and contact MS Telephone support they can verify the XP product code (I

believe that's was MS calls it). In any case, I've done this on at least one

occasion that I can recall with no problem (nb: if the product has been

activated too many times, MS will just say NO - as we all know).

As an example; during a recent office move, we had lost a box that contained

our CD keys etc. We upgraded one system with a new Vid card, more Ram and

added a second CPU. Of course, XP wanted to be activated again, and as we

had lost the original CD key, I called MS Telephone support and they obliged

me quite handily.

Having said that, It's not the best way go about activation and I agree

without some sort of POP, they may just as easily say no. But, if one cannot

find the CD Key, it's worth a shot.

Cheers :)

No he can't do this because installation will not progress unless a

valid serial number is entered. He hasn't got the valid serial number

so tough luck.

People can steal CDs from their employers or friends or from neighbors.

but they don' have serial number. If MS starts giving out serial

numbers over the phone then clearly it will go out of business very

quickly!!.

If your friend lost the Product Key, that CD is no better than a

non-absorbent coaster, no matter what it's origin or provenance. You'll

need to purchase a license of your own. Hint: It's the Product Key

that represents the license to use the software, not the CD.

You can try this:

If it was a retail license and you have proof of purchase:

How to Replace Lost, Broken, or Missing Microsoft Software or Hardware

If it was an OEM license, you should contact the computer's

manufacturer to obtain a new Product Key.

Without a valid Product Key, the OP won't be able to install the OS, so

he'll never have the option of activating it.

You can contact Microsoft as others suggest, but without proof of

ownership of the license, they may not help.

Your friend lost the part that has actual value.

Start making plans for using the low quality coaster given to you by

your friend.
