Windows XP

Toshiba satelite A100

 

Hi,

 

I had some Malware on my machine. Whenever I searched in google and clicked a link it would re-direct me to "www.findmycontent.com/blahblahblah"

 

I got it removed with bitdefender but since then my hotmail has stopped working with outlook express.

 

I have another machine and outlook express & my hotmail account work fine on there still.

 

It just repeatedly says "please enter your username and password". I have entered my password enough times (around 50) to be sure it's not a user input error.

 

I would really appreciate any help. Below is Hijackthis log file in case it helps.

Welcome to free PC Help Scotty.

 

I don't have the time right now to thoroughly go over your log, but it does show numerous needless startup programs, as well as more than one internet security program/service running.

 

I don't use Outlook Express, but to the best of my knowledge, Microsoft has been phasing out usage of outlook express with free hotmail. Someone else will need to confirm that.

 

In the meantime, I suggest you run the system through our malware removal procedure:

 

 

  • Malware is software designed to infiltrate or damage a computer system without the owner's informed consent.
    It is a combination of the words malicious and software.
    The expression is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software or program code.

 

  • Required Cleanup Steps
    1. Disable the Spybot Search & Destroy TEA TIMER if you use it and if it is enabled
    2. Run a Temporary file and cache cleaner (ATF)
    3. Run 2 Anti-Malware scanners (Listed Below)
    4. Run an Online Anti-Virus / Anti-Malware Scanner (Listed Below)
    5. Clear out old System Restore points
    6. If continued Malware type activity is present you may be asked to post a TrendMicro™ HijackThis™ Log file, do not do so unless requested.

     

The reason to run multiple scanners is to ensure that no single scanner is missing something.

The time it takes will vary depending on your system and your internet connection speed.

Typically the SUPERAntiSpyware and Malwarebytes scanners will take between 10 to 90 minutes.

The ESET online scan should take between 1 to 3 hours.

In most cases, these scans will suffice to clean and disinfect your computer.

Heavily infected systems or slower PCs can take much longer to scan and clean.

 

For best results print the following instructions and bookmark this Web page

To keep this guide printer-friendly, use your cursor to highlight the contents below.

From your browser select File - Print and in the printer dialog box under "Print range"

click the
Selection
choice to print out these instructions for removal of malware.

STEP 1

  • Disable Spybot Search & Destroys' TEA TIMER: (if installed, if not go to Step 2)

    1. Run Spybot-S&D in Advanced Mode.

    2. If it is not already set to do this Go to the Mode menu select "Advanced Mode"

    3. On the left hand side, Click on Tools

    4. Then click on the Resident Icon in the List

    5. Uncheck "Resident TeaTimer" and OK any prompts.

    6. Restart your computer.

STEP 2

  • Follow these instructions carefully.

  • Download ATF-Cleaner from
    to remove un-needed temporary files from your computer that may contain malware.

  • You can also download it from

  • When you run ATF-Cleaner, check the items as shown below for Main.

  • For FireFox, be sure to click on the FireFox tab on top and check the items as shown below for FireFox

  • NOTE:
    If you don't have FireFox or Opera installed then they will be grayed out and can be ignored

  • Then click on "Empty Selected".

STEP 3

  • Install and run the free version (not the Professional version) of SUPERAntiSpyware from

    • Accept any prompts to allow SUPERAntiSpyware to install the latest rules and infection definition files.

    • You do not have to send them your e-mail address, just click next.

    • You can leave the automated check for updates on.

    • You can uncheck "Send a diagnostic report to research center" if you don't want to send the information.

    • DO NOT
      allow SUPERAntiSpyware to protect your Home Page settings.

    • On the
      Top Left
      select the
      Scan your computer
      button.

    • Make sure there is a CHECK MARK on all
      Fixed Drives
      .

    • Click "Perform a Complete Scan". Click "Next" to Repair issues found and reboot the computer when prompted to do so.

STEP 4

  • Install and run
    Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    from

    • Accept all defaults for the installer

    • Allow the program to update the definitions

    • Click on the
      Quick Scan
      and click Next.

    • If any items are found allow it to clean them and then Reboot your computer.

STEP 5

  • Run an online scan with ESET from

    • You
      must
      use Internet Explorer for this online scan. FireFox, Opera, etc will not work for this scan.

    • If your computer is running Window's Vista, then you
      must first
      start Internet Explorer as an Administrator. To do so, right-click on the
      Internet Explorer
      icon in the Start Menu and select "
      Run as administrator
      " from the popup context menu.

     

    • Accept the terms and click "Start".

    • Once the scanner is ready, check "Remove found threats" AND "Scan unwanted applications".

    • Click "Start" to begin the scan.

    • When completed restart your computer

Make sure your internet firewall security is enabled, and then please return to Extreme Tech Support - Free PC Help and tell us how the computer seems to be operating.

At that time, you will receive instructions to assist you in removing malicious programs from your Add/Remove program list if warranted.

Hotmail outlook express issue.

 

Thanks for the prompt response.

 

My problem is not with Malware, I just felt that previous issue was relevant to give the entire picture. I am confident that has been removed with the use of Spybot, AVG and Bitdefender.

 

The issue is that hotmail works fine with my other PC on outlook express, but has stopped working on this machine.

Microsoft has blocked new hotmail accounts from Outlook Express since 2005. Since then they have been phasing out the old accounts and more agressively so this year. However you said the same account works with OE on another computer correct? Is your other computer using Internet Explorer 6? I see this one is using IE7.

 

Do as Seth suggests to make sure your system is not still infected first. The tools you used are not good enough.

If you use IE reset the Advanced funtions in Internet Options. While in Options also click the Security tab and Reset all zones to default levels.

 

Check your OE settings based on those of your other computer. When you click cancel do you get an error message?

Thanks Kelly, tried that a dozen times already, and have been careful to mirror the setup in my other PC's OE.

 

Randy, I have run all those steps for malware removal and it appears I am Malware free, but I seem to be suffering after effects - or the effects that the anti-malware programmes might have had.

 

Just on the browser issue I use Firefox and not IE...although followed your instructions in any case. Only thing I wasn't clear on is, where do you want me to press cancel?

Recreating the account usually works so that is strange. The anti-malware programs would not have caused issues. So they found nothing? What effects are you experiencing?

 

It's been a while since I used OE but I was hoping for an error message once it failed to logon. In any case I'll research this some more.

outlook express problem

 

Hey Randy,

 

Just to recap, the initial problem I had was all my google searches being re-directed to http://www.findmycontent/blah blah letters&numbers.

 

That prompted me to run a load of scans, Bitdefender found and removed it eventually. I have since run all the others recommended. They found nothing since. My machine operates fine apart from the outlook express issue.

 

IMPORTANT

I updated my IE6 to IE7, even though I never use it. The reason being that when the malware was redirecting my firefox searches i opened IE6 to see if that worked. But had the same issue. Therfore updated IE6 it to see if that would help.

 

I'm strongly suspecting now that it was the IE6 to IE7 update that affected outlook express now I think back to the timing....(when i had the malware OE still worked fine)

This might be an authentication issue. A lot of people have had this after upgrading to IE7. Try the Microsoft patch.

Hi Dalo, not as far as I know...

 

UPDATE

I have since rolled back IE7 to IE6 following microsofts notes on how to do so.

 

Firefox works fine but IE6 cannot find server.

Outlook express now reports a new message...

 

"Unable to poll for new messages on your HTTP server. Account: 'Hotmail', Server: 'http://services.msn.com/svcs/hotmail/httpmail.asp', Protocol: HTTPMail, Server Response: '', Port: 0, Secure(SSL): No, Socket Error: 12029, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E"

This indicates that something is blocking access. What's different between your two computers. Any security programs, the way you access the intenet etc.

 

You should reinstall IE7 and try the patch but something doesn't match up.

RESOLVED - IE6 + OE7 now back to normal.

 

Problem miraculously fixed.

 

Having rolled back to IE6 i changed the connection settings unticking - "use a proxy server for LAN"........ under > internet options > Connections >LAN settings

 

Don't know when or why it became ticked, but IE and outlook now working fine.

That's great scotty. Who knows why Microsofts settings change by themselves but they sometimes do that.

 

But you're right if you don't use a proxy and that is set it would block you.
