iTunes 7.3.2

Hi,

Does anyone know where I can get the download for *iTunes 7.3.2*? Will

this *iTunes* work with the Windows 98SE? I tried the Apples website and the

one they have now is 7.4 and it is for XP and above. The reason I want to

know is because I need it for the class notes from the teacher. The teacher

does podcasts for his classes.

TIA

No version of iTunes runs on 98SE.

Of course this is increasingly common. Linux may offer a cheap

solution. PCs that run Linux as well as Win98 sometimes enable

Linux connection with devices built exclusively for XP and Vista.

You don't need iTunes to play podcasts ...

Roman,

Some podcasts do work without iTunes. Example: 1.1. Our teacher uses the

iTunes 7.3.2. I have tried his links without the iTunes and I could not get

it. Maybe his link was wrong, I will keep trying. I found the iTunes 7.3.2

by Googling it. The site said that Windows 2000 was required. The newer

version 7.4 requires XP or later.

Thanks,

Hi,

Well, the iTunes for podcasts is accessible through the Universities. It

is called iTunesU. The one they are using now is Version 7.4. I can't even

get the 7.3.2 without paying for it. The teacher said that the 7.3.2 was the

one to get. According to the site for iTunesU, it is not. 7.3.2 would not

work on this computer anyway. The teachers use iTunes to get the notes from

the classes to the students. These are the ones you need the iTunes to

access the notes. I guess they think all use the latest technology. When you

tell other students that you are still using the Windows 98SE, they look at

you with a ? on their faces. and you get a frown from them. Most have fried

several computers since 98SE. Mine is still going strong.

I spoke to the girl at the reference desk in the library at the

University, she said that maybe I could access the notes through the

Computer Room in the library. I may try that next week.

Today I was speaking to the city Fire Chief at a meeting. He told me that

his daughter went back to reinstalling XP. She had Vista and it always was

crashing, she hated Vista.

Thanks everyone,

Angel

If it works on Win2K, which is a bit dated, too, maybe there is a slight

chance it might work on Win98SE? Have you tried installing it? I've

done that sometimes, and, on some rare occasions, a program will install,

even though it didn't mention Win98SE as being "supported". Of course, a

lot of the time the installer just flat out balks, and says "No way, Jose!".

However, if you're planning on trying this, you probably should have a good

and recent system backup, just in case it messes up. I use a backup USB

2.0 hard drive enclosure (containing an identical IDE hard disk) for this

kind of work.

Hi Bill,

I usually use the backup that came with the computer (Drive Image) to

backup the computer about every week or so. I don't have USB 2.0. The only

have (2) 1.1 USB ports. I would have to get the USB 2.0 port for it and the

EHD. I would have to get my grandson put it in for me. He is good at things

with the computers. I have too much electricity in my own system, I would be

afraid that I would fry the motherboard. Of course, I know the precautions.

The 7.3.2 iTunes as I understand it is the old one, some companies are using

it for their music now and ask for a yearly fee to use it. The one the

University uses now is free and it is 7.4 under iTunesU. When I read about

it, you need XP or Vista to use it. I will try to find out more from the

University Computer Room that is located in the Library Building. I had also

put out a question to the Technical dept. at the University concerning this

question about using an older version on 98SE to get the notes. I do not

want to have to buy a new computer just for classes. If I was going for a

diploma, I would probably do it. I am auditing the classes. This does not

warrant the expense of a new computer. I am enjoying the classes. I learn

something new almost everyday.

The real question is - where is he distributing his content? If it's

only available from the Apple iTunes web site, it's iTunes only. If

it's available from another web site, via RSS or some other vehicle,

you should be able to download the content and access it with programs

that work on Windows 98.

What is the URI for his content/class notes?

Oops. Googled for iTunesU. It's the Apple web site!

iTunes only!

You're out of luck.

Working with the folks at the University library is your best bet at

this point.

Vince,

When I tried his link it took me to the download page from Apple. It

wanted you to download a later version. 7.4.

Today I got an email from the help desk at the University with a link to

download 7.3.2. I tried the link and it would not download that version. The

link is:

http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/win/29621&vid=44272&mode=inf

Maybe you can try to find out if it will work. It took me to a page and

would not even try to download.

Thanks,

Tried that link, no luck, though it will show info back to version 4.1

[2003].

Are you downloading TO an iPod, or are you trying from your hard drive, or

directly from the NET?

How about these for 98SE:

http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ - costs

http://www.98-drivers.com/ipod.html - MUST donate 5 dollars

Or how about WinAMP?

ALL require that you have an iPod [proprietary format]...

Dan, I don't know what you mean by "run your Ipod songs through Windows 98

SE" but you can use Xplay from http://www.mediafour.com to load mp3s on his nano on

his 98SE system. If by "Ipod songs" you mean "iTunes purchases" I don't

think they are playable on 98SE but I could be wrong. Good luck.

MEB,

I am not trying to download anything to the iTunes. I am trying to get

the notes that our professor downloads to iTunes. His podcasts of the

classes. You need the 7.3.2 version to get his notes. So that is as simple

So I guess that the best I can do is try to get it up at the University. If

Okay, that was already understood.

What I was indirectly trying to show was; that if one intends to attempt

iPod/iTunes usage in 9X/ME, one will likely need to use a *non-official*

program or pluggin during the attempt. Though the iPod can be used for

pretty much anything, i.e. from a mobile *hard drive* to a music/video

player [depending upon the hardware version/supported aspects], to provide

this in an *unsupported* OS like 9X apparently requires something other than

one of Apple's official versions.

Several parties on the NET are working on *pluggins* and/or programs to

allow such usage, but these will NEVER be official *Apple authorized* for

9X/ME as Apple never really intended such usage. Apple is also constantly

creating newer versions which apparently are NOT compatible with previous

versions. One could reasonably claim this is done to ensure Apple remains in

control of its products and software necessary to use them. One could also

raise claim that this may be an attempt to force iPod users to upgrade the

device. I have seen materials which claim Apple feels that four years [or

less] is the *life* of one of its devices.

That, of course, remains the major points of contention to the users of

Apple's products, be the user running 9X/ME or one of the officially

supported applications from Apple..

All I know about it is that you need iTunes to get the podcast notes.

The instructions say, that "after you download the iTunes Version 7.3.2,

then restart the computer. Use the link again. Once you arrive at the

Univesity's region of the iTunes network, navigate to the Arts and Sciences

icon, click on that. then click on the course of his that you want, then

click on the podcast you want, and then it should start for you."

When I used his link it did not work. When I typed his link in the

address bar it came up at the Apple website to download the Version 7.4.

The link I sent you was the link from the Help Desk of the library not

his. This was the link that they said to use to download the Version 7.3.2.

Security Concerns with Windows

Security Concerns with Windows

4 years or less --- wow that makes Microsoft seem like a saint in comparison

with thier support of Windows 98 and 98 Second Edition from 1998/1999 until

July 11, 2006 which is really awesome on Microsoft's part in my opinion. Now

lest you think I am totally for Microsoft you must remember that I feel that

eliminating the 9x operating systems was Microsoft's major mistake and I know

Microsoft wanted to cut down on costs but with cutting down on costs

Microsoft allowed for hackers to attack their products more easily. I am

talking about how XP and even Vista which are NT (New Technology) based the

business source code as compared to the 9x consumer source code of 98 and 98

Second Edition. The surface attack area is much greater in these current NT

products because they provide many more opportunities of attack. Yes, Vista

is much more secure than XP but also is currently less backwards compatible

than XP. Yes, Vista has 256 bit cipher strength in Internet Explorer which

not even XP Professional has currently. You can just go to the help and

about tab to prove this fact that the cipher strength of IE 6 and 7 in

Windows XP Professional is still only 128 bit compared to 256 bit cipher

strength. I was really worried and freaked out before because it was so

scary to have someone hack or steal my password somehow through 128 bit

encryption of webmail.aps.edu and my email of weiser_dan@aps.edu. It was

also scary to have someone or many people --- I don't know --- hack through

my home computer which is connected via an ethernet wire so it is not

wireless and has full stealth status of at least over 1000 ports according to

the Shields Up Test at grc.com. This is really crazy since I am really

careful to read emails in plain texts, not open up attachments, use AVG

antivirus full scans frequently and it updates daily automatically as well as

using the protections of Spybot Search and Destroy and SpywareBlaster from

Majorgeeks.com. I think the person was able to take advantage of

vulnerability(ies) in Cisco VPN access which allowed me to acess the APS

(Albuquerque Public School) network at home and which I had been granted full

access from by Ken Cole who is the Director of Technology at APS schools.

Anyway, it seems the hack happened through the vulnerabilities in VPN

(Virtual Private Networking) access and the Department of Homeland security

website has mentioned some current vulnerabilites with Cisco VPN access that

may have been patched by now. I am an email subscriber now to the us-cert

site.

Again, understood. So as you were advised, if its on the Apple iTunes site

as a pod cast, either you find some software to access it or you will have

to access it from some other computer.

Right, and there lay the problem. If you had an iPod then this discussion

would be leading in a different direction.

|

| > | or

| > | > directly from the NET?

|

| From the NET, I guess.

Right, and off of Apple's own site apparently.

|

| > | >

| > | > How about these for 98SE:

| > | >

| > | > http://www.redchairsoftware.com/anapod/ - costs

| > | >

| > | > Or how about WinAMP?

| > | >

| > | > ALL require that you have an iPod [proprietary format]...

|

| What is *an iPod [proprietary format]*

Hmm, think of it like a picture [bmp, gif, jpg, wmf, etc.], or sound [wav,

mp3, asf, ogg vorbis, aaif, etc.]. Each differing format requires a program

which supports that format.

Podcasts require something that can decrypt/interpret the format. Though

there are other *podcasts* [non-Apple formats] the ones you're trying to

access:

1. Are on an Apple forum/site.

2. Were created with Apple's software in its format.

2. And the site checks for iTunes on your computer.

How?

Here you need to think of something like Adobe Reader. When you access a

site with a PDF, the Reader is called via its BHO hook to access, decode,

and view the PDF. If you haven't installed Adobe Reader [or a program that

provides that function AND places a hook] then the site link errors. Your

only option is to download the PDF, and use some other local PDF viewing

program to open it.

Same holds true for iTunes/iPodCasts. IF [emphasis] it were possible to

access the podcast and download it to your computer, then you could use some

program [which supports that format] to view/listen to the teacher's

lecture. OR you have to search for some *player* which supports the

iPod/iTunes format, works in 98 AND could pass the site check [not likely].

Apparently though, as the intended podcasts are on Apple [or some

subsidiary], likely someone else would have to access the files and download

them for you since you will fail the installed iTunes\iPod software

installation check for the site. I checked iTunesU, and could find no public

*backdoor* area [even the xml page requires iTunes]. Or as you have

suggested, perhaps the school's library or computer area can be used to do

so..

If you could then tranfer that downloaded lecture/class notes to some

mobile storage device, you could possibly then use a non-official PodCast

viewer/player on your 98 system after loading on your hard drive.. however,

you may have another stumbling block: requires QuickTime [7.1.6], though

perhaps that has also been addressed within an unofficial application ...

Here's another one.

http://www.yamipod.com/main/modules/docs/

Anyway, seems we've come to a close on the issue. SOL

Ah Dan, having been both side of the coin hacker/security, I'll make this

brief.

There is no truly unbreakable security. The only way the government has

found is to completely destroy all materials, and run a separate network

from any public access. Even then security can and has been breached.

A network ALWAYS has tracks to follow.

However, posting as you do, it is no wonder that you were attacked. Likely

some beginning hacker, cutting their teeth...

I mean nothing personal, just that you need to get a little more savvy out

here, and calm down. There was an old saying: "Loose lips sink ships."

As for Cisco issues, yes, I had posted that in this group.

Re: iTunes 7.3.2

Hi MEB,

No problem with the combining the thread.

I understand the problem with trying to even download the Podcasts

using my computer. Even if I can access the lecture notes at the library

they would be in voice, as I understand it. Then I would have trouble

getting them to my computer. The last time I used the computer at the

library there was no sound. If they still have no sound, then I would not be

able to hear them. I will have to check on that before I even try. If they

had speakers or earphone capability, I could hear them. I would have to take

notes as I do in class.

I also understand that I would have to have iTunes capability on the

computer in order to transfer the lectures. The only portable devices I have

is s Sandisk flash drive and a floppy disk

I also found that the Apple Co. has again upgraded the version to

7.4.1 as of last night. I do not know what the version is today. It looks

like they upgrade it almost every week!! At the Apple Site, they had someone

giving a presentation and you had to have Quick Time 7 to see it. I could

hear it but could not see it. It was about the new iPod.

Thank you so very much for the explanation of things and help. I will

let you all know what happens.

If they still have no sound, then I would not

be

| able to hear them. I will have to check on that before I even try. If they

| had speakers or earphone capability, I could hear them. I would have to

take

| notes as I do in class.

| I also understand that I would have to have iTunes capability on

the

| computer in order to transfer the lectures. The only portable devices I

have

| is s Sandisk flash drive and a floppy disk

| I also found that the Apple Co. has again upgraded the version to

| 7.4.1 as of last night. I do not know what the version is today. It looks

| like they upgrade it almost every week!! At the Apple Site, they had

someone

| giving a presentation and you had to have Quick Time 7 to see it. I could

| hear it but could not see it. It was about the new iPod.

| Thank you so very much for the explanation of things and help. I

will

| let you all know what happens.

| Angel

Okay, I'll keep looking around occasionally to see if any one makes any

progress on an SE answer.
