Guest smohsinahmad Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Hi. I was installing my palmOne. I mistakenly added a device which is displayed as Unknown Device in the Device Manager. Infact, I have two Unknown devices under Palm OS Handheld category. Now, when I try to uninstall these two, I get the error "Windows could not load the installer for {................. a long alphanumeric code...............}. Contact your Hardware vendor for assistance". OK so I know since these devices do not exist, there wont be installers etc for these devices. The thing is that I cannot make these devices go from the Device Manager and everytime my pc starts, so does the hardware wizard which prompts to install these two devices. Please help me in getting these two unknown and unwanted devices out of the Device Manager. Thanks!

McCarty Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Re: Device Manager Error If you're comfortable/capable of making Registry Edits you can manually remove the "Unknown" entries from Device Manager. 1.) Click Run ( type ) Regedit [Enter] 2.) Navigate to: HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Enum *Locate the Palm OS Handheld Category, Expand it [+] 3.) Right Click each entry and take "Export", pick an appropriate name and save. 4.) Right Click each of the instances of "Unknown" and take Delete 5. Reboot the PC and check that the Palm OS category is gone "smohsinahmad" <smohsinahmad@discussions.microsoft.com> wrote in message news:EFC3CBE4-2E32-42EA-83C9-5C7D530EE1C7@microsoft.com... > Hi. > > > > I was installing my palmOne. Guest smohsinahmad Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Re: Device Manager Error heyaz! Thanks McCarty for the quick response. But the Palm OS Category was not listed under Enum. Any other location to look into? "R. McCarty" wrote: > If you're comfortable/capable of making Registry Edits you can > manually remove the "Unknown" entries from Device Manager. > 1.) Guest R. McCarty Posted September 7, 2007 Posted September 7, 2007 Re: Device Manager Error Maybe, start at the outside heading of \Enum and using the search function in Regedit (Text Option edit, Find ) - use the keyword unknown. If a match is found make sure it's within the Enum sub-keys. Then follow the previous instructions for backup/removal. Go Slowly and check carefully - you're in dangerous terrain making Registry changes.
