Is it some kind of specialised mouse that needs a specific driver?

Have you tried another mouse in the pc or that mouse on any other pc?

The mouse shows up in device manager. Its just a basic ps2 mouse - I've tried the soft ware disc and updating driver but it says the best driver is already installed. I've also tried another mouse via the usb ports but still the same. I assume the connections nd mouse are functioning as there is no problem with it in safe mode.

Ok try uninstalling the mouse in device manager keeping the mouse attached and reboot and let ME "find" the mouse again.

What brand of mouse is this? You say it has software that goes with it. Uninstall the software for the mouse, remove the drivers from device manager and reboot.

Windows is obviously picking up the mouse with generic Windows drivers as it works in safe mode.
