Blank screen after upgrading to ie6

Recommended Posts

Hi

Have just recently upgraded to ie6 from ie5.5. Whenever i go for a restart i

get a blank ( black ) screen with a flashing cursor in the top left of

screen. The only way to get out of it is to press re-set button on compy or

switch off then back on again.

I am running Windows ME 4.90.3000

Thanking anyone in advance for any help

You say: "...to get out of it", do you mean IE 5.5 reappears?

If that's the case, what version is registered in Add/Remove?

A little more info would be helpful.

Re: Blank screen after upgrading to ie6

"To get out of it" is to get off the blank screen with the flashing cursor,

as when it is on this blank screen, no button presses will do anything. Only

a reset of the compy or a shutdown by pressing the power button for about 5

seconds will get me off that blank screen. Nothing reappears when i do a

restart. Have tried the restart on the start button, and also ctrl, alt, del

twice but neither restart the machine. All i get is the computer "freezing"

with the flashing cursor in the top left hand corner.

The version that is registered in add/remove is "Microsoft Internet Explorer

6 SP1 and Internet Tools"

Re: Blank screen after upgrading to ie6

Try uninstalling IE6 (it's in Add/Remove Programs) and then reinstalling

it again. When reinstalling do this with your AV paused or disabled,

remembering to re-enable when finished.

Doesn't look like he is getting far enough to do the uninstall, Mike.

Pauly, can you start into the Safe Mode, if so, you should be able to follow

Mike's advice from that point. Barring that, if you can get into the Safe

Mode, see if you can perform a System Restore to a point prior to the bad

install. If you are unable to get into the Safe Mode, do you have an

EBD?.....Emergency Boot Disk? That should get you where you need to be. If

no EBD, you can get someone to dl'd one for you from Bootdisk.com......just

make sure you get the one for Windows Me.

I am able to boot into safe mode, but what is the AV that you refer to.

The ie6 install which i did was the ie6 setup program, then it installs the

files that are needed from the net. Is this one o.k to use or should i

download the complete ie6 and install from that.

Re: Blank screen after upgrading to ie6

AV = AntiVirus. Some antivirus programs block access to the registry

resulting in incomplete installations.

If you can boot to Safe Mode you should be able to uninstall IE6 and

return to an earlier version such as IE5.5 without needing to go on line.

If this enables you to boot normally then go on line and download and

reinstall IE6 SP1.

Tried all that and still no joy. One thing i did notice was that when i was

in safe mode and did a re-start, it did so with no blank screen and booted to

the desktop. but as soon as i tried a re-start in normal mode then i got the

"freeze" and the blank screen with the flashing cursor.

Do you have access to another machine?

If so, here is a link which 'may' provide some helpful tips:

Start the computer in Safe mode, wait until the "Help and Support"

window opens and select "System Restore". Make sure "Restore

my computer to an earlier time" is selected, click "Next" and

select a restore point that predates the problem.

If i were to do the system restore to an earlier point then i would lose the

update to IE6 and go back to IE5.5. This is one thing i do not wish to do. I

think it must be hardware related as i have another machine running ME and i

upgraded to IE6 with no problem at all.

Re: Blank screen after upgrading to ie6

You need to uninstall and then reinstall IE6 and using system restore and

rolling back to before your problems started is one way of doing so.

Something that I suggested you do earlier two weeks ago but since you

reported that you were unable to uninstall IE6 using Add/Remove Programs

(which suggests something odd with your setup) then using system restore

should do this for you however a lot of time has passed since you first

reported your problem and the longer you leave it the less likely system

restore will be able to help.

Re: Blank screen after upgrading to ie6

Alternatively try repairing Internet Explorer. Either use Add/Remove

Programs, Select IE6 and click Remove and then select Repair from the

menu. If IE6 does not appear in Add/Remove programs repairing is a little

more complicated and you need to use Start | Run and in the box type (all

as one line):

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE5Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet

Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\Windows\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

Keep the spaces (after ll32, ance, Program, rnet, EXE", /g, \IE and tall)

and also the quote marks. Now click OK and follow the prompts.

This can be done from Safe Mode.

See MS KB 194177 - "Description of the Internet Explorer Repair tool"

(http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=194177). This article also applies to

IE6 although not mentioned in the article.

Hi Mike

Don't think i ever said i could'nt remove IE6 via add/remove.

Anyway have just tried the repair bit and its still the same. Am pretty sure

its hardware related so will have to live with it until i am able to upgrade

the compy.

Thanks for all your help.

Well you did say "Tried all that and still no joy." (Sun, 9 Sep 2007

06:30:01 -0700) when I first suggested that you uninstall IE6 using

Add/Remove Programs.

Personally I think it unlikely that your problem is hardware related but

then I know nothing about your PC so there may be other factors at play

that I/we know nothing about.

You seem to be saying that the computer works normally when

initially started, but fails during a warm reboot. If this is the case,

you might try hitting F8 during the restart and using "Logged" or

"Step by step confirmation" to determine where the problem is

occurring.

Thanks to all involved and i seem to have sorted the problem.

I changed the motherboard and all seems to be ok, although why it started

doing it only after installing IE6 i will never know.

Once again thank you to all

You've done it the hard way, pauly, but circumvention is one way, no doubt.

Good to know you see light at the end of your tunnel.

And you are welcome, too.
