I have a legal license key of XP Pro from Penn State. The XP Pro installation

that came with it is faulty. Can I download another copy of XP Pro from

Microsoft and use my license key during that installation?

You cannot download XP legally from anywhere unless you have a TechNet

or MSDN subscription.

If you got the key and defective CD from Penn State, ask them to

replace the defective CD.

Then contact the person a Penn State that you got Windows XP From.

They will have the appropriate accounts and passwords.

Or if you have the appropriate information:

http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-ca/subscriptions/default.aspx

On the right side, click the download section.

They don't have actual cd's to give out. My Penn State professor set us all

up with an MSDN Academic Alliance membership where we have a selection of

certain softwares to get for free. The XP Pro ISO image must be faulty, can I

download a perfect copy from microsoft somewhere and use the license key I

have?

You mentioned an ISO image. Did you copy that ISO image and create a data

CD or did you use a CD burning software and use it to burn the ISO image to

the CD?

In Roxio's Creator Classic it is called "Burn from disk image file". Nero

has something similar but I don't remember exactly what it is called with

their program.

To tell the difference, look at the CD in Explorer. If it is one file

listed with the ISO extension you created a Data CD and not a CD that will

boot XP OS installation. If it has many files including a folder that says

I386, I will then agree the CD is bad. If you still have the ISO image

file, recreate the new CD.

You have an ISO image?

Are you trying to boot directly to the ISO?

You can not do that.

First you must use another program such as Nero or ISO Recorder to

burn an image of the ISO:

I first tried burning the ISO to a DVD using DVD Decrypter and then running

it straight from there with the computer still on - no restart. After that

didn't work, I used Daemon Tools to mount the original ISO image. I recieved

the same error.

"An error occurred copying file aepzy4z2.sys to C:\$WIN_NT$.~BT\aepzy4z2.sys.

The file is missing. Contact your system administrator.

You may choose to retry the copy, skip this file, or exit Setup."

OK, looks like you created a DVD not a CD using the ISO image. Recommend

using a CD R instead and actually burning the CD. Daemon Tools is a good

product but you are trying to install the OS to a computer, not using an

application program from CD.

No. Unless you have a very expensive MSDN subscription (in which case

you wouldn't be asking this question), there are no *legitimate* sources

from which one can download a Microsoft operating system. You'd be wise

to avoid illicit sources, as you're likely to get more (in the terms of

malware and/or mysterious credit card charges) than you bargained for.

Anyway, any Product Key that you received from your university would

most likely have been for an Academic (a.k.a. Students and Teachers)

license. If you're still a student (or faculty member) of Penn State,

simply contact the appropriate department to get a new CD. If you're no

longer affiliated with the school, whether by virtue of graduating,

transferring to another school, or "taking a semester off," that

Academic license (Product Key) is no longer valid.
