XP Service pack

Recommended Posts

Posted

Hello,

I have just reinstalled xp pro and I haven't installed the service

pack. I installed all the softwares and drivers without even

installing the service pack. What happens if I don't install the

service pack?

Is it a must for the computer to function properly?

Regards.

It is not a must but it is highly recommended. Service

Packs resolve a number of issues (security and

otherwise) that became apparent only after the initial

version was released.

In addition to Pegasus' excellent advice, (my opinion here), if this

computer will be used on the Internet, the Service Packs and additional

updates available at the Windows Update site *are* a must if you want to

stay "safe". An un-patched machine has far too many vulnerabilities.

A good read before installing SP2, though somewhat lengthy, will help make

the upgrade process smoother, and can be found here:

What are the potential dangers of a wrong sp install? Are there any or

am I just being naive?

Yes of course you could - just like SP2. But it's NOT out, and is not due

until at least the first half of 2008.....

Plus the fact that SP3 will (AFAIK) just be all the cumulative updates since

SP2.....there will be no program upgrades as Vista is that....

"The" service pack? There have been two service packs so far, and the

third is expected early next year. SP2 is the latest.

A "must"? No. But I strongly recommend installing SP2. Much of what's

in it is security-related, and you are at increased risk without it.

Why would you even consider not installing it? As a general rule,

everyone should always install all critical updates and service packs

as they are released.
