Read the Fine Manual that came with your computer or look at some of these links: Accessing the BIOS: http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm http://www.uktsupport.co.uk/reference/biosp.htm http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000235.htm Malke -- Elephant Boy Computers http://www.elephantboycomputers.com "Don't Panic!" Guest dobey Posted September 8, 2007 Posted September 8, 2007 Re: bios and lan You can probably download the manual from the manufacturers website. You should try looking in device manager and checking the properties for the network adapters. Allow to wake from standby settings etc.. You say the same time every night, are you sure you haven't set a timer somewhere? LAN adapters normally wake periodically, not at any specific time. As a matter of fact, you have to access the BIOS before Windows even starts to boot. One common way is to press the Del key when you first power on, but that's not necessarily right for your computer. Watch the screen carefully when you first boot; there's often a message there telling you what to do. If not, check your system documentation or check with your vendor. Also look here: http://michaelstevenstech.com/bios_manufacturer.htm Or just try the Del key. There's a good chance that's correct for you. -- Ken Blake, Microsoft MVP Windows - Shell/User Please Reply to the Newsgroup

Almost always there is a brief flash of instruction such as: "Hit <DEL> to enter setup" "Tap [F2] for setup info" Do whatever it says.
Guest Lil' Dave Posted September 9, 2007 Posted September 9, 2007 Re: bios and lan If the PC is O-F-F, XP is not running. Therefore, XP has nothing to do with it, including anything noted in device manager. This is going to be a long thread since you apparently aren't aware of how to enter the bios setup. A quick fix is to use a UPS with an ON/OFF switch. Turned off, the PC has no power. Wake on LAN cannot function if the PC has no power. It also isolates the PC further from lightning strikes and power surges. A similar but not as effective device that will also cure your ills is an under-monitor power control switching assembly.
